My ATI 5850 is temperamental with my Onkyo NR808 av receiver to negotiate pcm multichannel. With the ati driver it regularly needs a push like a a change in resolution or a restart of av receiver or sometimes a pc restart to lock into pcm multichannel mode at the start of a session. With the realiteck hdmi audio driver multichannel is negotiated /works 99% of time.

Any one got any general experience on the reliability of hdmi audio handshaking with pcm multichannel. I am looking to buy a new gpu but will keep the receiver/ Is the red or green team better or worse in this area/for this onkyo model...is the gpu model relevant.

thank you

I can't really help, but my 5870 has no problem with the handshake with my Onkyo TX-SR605. I do however only use XBMC, so it depends on what content i'm watching on that which dictates what bitstream is sent over. Never have any problems getting the DTS-HD-MA or True HD to show

yes i dont have any problems with spdif output in those types of formats (the receiver seems fine detecting a bitstream like DTS). I use PCM multichannel so that windows sounds and skype continue to function whilst playing eg dts content. Does your configuration allow windows sounds during movie playback with eg dts?

No because i've disabled windows sounds :p It's only used as a living room HTPC and occasional game machine , so i have no use for windows sounds so they're disabled. Are you using SPDIF as well as HDMI, or was it just an experimental thing?

i may have used the wrong terminology..i only use hdmi as the physical connection. When i say spdif perhaps what i should have said is 'bitstream' the compressed content to the receiver in eg dts for the receiver to decode. I cant understand why the pc decoding to pcm (when hdmi can handle 7.1 channels uncompressed) is bad and it doesnt sound worse, so i am living in the belief that pcm is ideal to ensure all pc sounds get to the receiver

Turns out i had the wrong end of the stick..the device was actually developing a fault..a common fault with onkyos of that era where the solder on BGA Chip IC 9001 failed. Fortunately onkyo have agreed a good will out of warranty repair (and so they should, i have an amplifier thats 25 years old going strong.. and its a common fault, ie a design fault).

so nothing wrong with the driver this was coincidental and led me down the wrong path.
