Evening,

I've written myself a bit of a to-do list recently, and I'm trying to get myself into a good place, mentally and physically.

One of the things I'd like to do is volunteer a bit of free time once a week, and I don't mind where.

I've tried http://www.do-it.org.uk/ but the site seems down right now.

Does anyone here volunteer, and if so, what do you do? What sort of impact does your help have on the people or organisation you volunteer with?

Depends what sort of volunteering you want to do. I volunteered at a local charity shop for a few months. It was a nice way to get out of the house and away from the computer as I was unemployed and had nothing else to do.

That may be a good place to start if you're interested in it. Just pop in and ask if they need any volunteers.

Not sure I had any impact on anyone because of it. I did it more for myself than anyone else.

I am currently un-employed and needing a way of getting out of the house and meeting new people. This could be a good way to do it, preferably people my own age range i.e. 30.

I recently used that "do-it" site to volunteer at The Scout Association. My reasons for doing it really were that now i'm a fully qualified accountant I have extra time that I was previously using for studying. I also wanted to use my skills to help out and I spotted that they were looking for a Group Treasurer (doing finances for one scout hut).

When I went to meet them, it turned out that they were looking for a District Treasurer as well which is an executive role overseeing 6 scout huts near me so I took that on. They seemed really grateful which made it more rewarding.

Be careful what you volunteer for! I still say that sign outside the local Police Station saying they were looking for a man for a series of sex attacks at the local 6th Form School for Girls was very misleading.

I used to be help the local Air Cadets as a CI in Windermere. Now a lot of my spare time goes to running Southampton's hackerspace (somakeit.org.uk).

I've been a leader in a Scout Troop for the last 6 years. I went through all of the different sections when I was younger so I see it as giving back for what I received.

We get to build fires, go kayaking, climbing, hiking so it's not all just hard work :D

I've volunteered as a blood courier in London, 4x4 response in Yorkshire, as a Community First Responder and also with St John Ambulance.

Yes I helped my sons nursery - me and 2 other parents + a builder created a new set of playground items a sandpit a story time chair/seats / a tunnel with flexy mirrors
To replace the worn plastic toy's

Impact kids got new toys play areas that will be around for a few years to come

I'm liking the variety here.

I've had a look at a few local places. There's an arts centre that hosts local musicians/comedians and theatre groups, and has lost a lot of funding due to government cuts. They're looking for someone to help market and promote events etc, online and offline. 5 hours per week.

If I could get onto the do-it.org.uk site, I'd have a bit more to look at. I'd like to help the elderly/vulnerable - I see there's warm & well type visits that people can do - which would appeal to me (making friends & giving someone who might not have anyone to talk to, somebody to chat with).

We help at Willow dog Rescue, A local dog rescue charity in South Yorkshire. We go to the pound and collect the dogs, vet runs, home checks, organise charity events, manage the website, foster rescued dogs until they are rehomed(in fact one a 16 week old Lurcher we are fostering is snoring away under my desk as we speak :) ).

yep. latest is to flog poppies for the poppy appeal for the royal british legion for the next couple of weekends.

No, I don't volunteer but I hold doors, let people out on the road and, most importantly, I acknowledge when others have let me out.

So I do my bit.

I went to the Army Cadets volunteer recruitment.. looks really rewarding. Not taken it up yet due to heavy work commitments and strange shifts I work. Rewarding though from what they shown us during the day.
