Ok I am close to buying a complete new build.

Mainly wanting it for BF4, BF3 and arma series.

I know BF3 seems to be better optimised for Nvidia cards and ATI is supposedly in partnership with BF4.

So will you be buying an ATI card for BF4??

The choice is really up to you. ATI still have to release more details around their 290x and nVidia have to do the same with their 780Ti.

The price for performance at the moment still sits with ATI, a 7970/280x can be bought for seriously low prices, I think there's still a deal on the 280x @ £229. I'd also recommend reading up on the up and coming tech, ATI's Mantle & nVidia's G-sync to see which you would be more beneficial to you.

Hope this help!?

Even if BF4 is optimized for Nvidia cards, the extra fps you gain from the overall better price/performance in most price brackets would make AMD my first choice in GPUs.

eg.
If i was buying a new card 3gb Vram minimum would be a must. The 4gb 770 costs £355 due to the premium added for more RAM. For that money, you can almost afford two 7950s which will have 3gb Vram and way way more grunt!

I am going to go for either the 290 or the 290x depending on the release price. Then will put that underwater and get clocking straight away to see the limits of these things!

The MSI 280x currently on offer is a steal. I would choose that personally. With the added fact that mantle is coming in December that should hopefully add some more frames making.

BF4 comes bundled with AMD's new GPUs. It is optimized to use Mantle and using an AMD card to play it will yield you better results.

According to IGN, EA says it has inked a partnership with AMD that will see all games based on the Frostbite 3 engine "optimized exclusively for AMD GPUs and CPUs." Those optimized games will include Battlefield 4, Need for Speed Rivals, and the next Mirror's Edge.

What does a 280X CF compare to? I had a 780 so I'd want to be a fair bit better than that, playing at 1440p. Finding it hard to get any benchmarks.

It'll be interesting to see if the new series suffers from Microstutter or not in Xfire mode, it's the only reason I sold my second 7970.

I really hope so :)

I wouldn't bother with the 660, the 680 would be the best option with some great deals. The 7950 is a great card also, some of their prices cannot be beaten for price vs performance.

Chuck a couple of these in crossfire and your looking at close to 780 performance.

I think you meant over gtx780 performance. The plus side to the 7950's is they come way under clocked so there is tons of performance for free without touching any voltage.

BF4 comes bundled with AMD's new GPUs.

Only the BF4 edition of the R9 290x, which is/was availble for pre order.
It wll not be bundled with other AMD GPU,s at the start, how long or even if it becomes part of the bundle we just dont know.
