Hangover Prevention

Well it's just like most charity events, why can't people just be aware of it and support it throughout the year rather than have some cheesy gimmick people can brag to their colleagues about taking part in.

Drink about 3 pints of water before I go to bed after a night out.

That is what I've been doing every time I go out, Down a pint of water when I get home, then take another pint to bed. Though if you still have a hangover, it's a hell of a lot better than it could have been!

Might just do that in future then, drink a tonne of water in between each drink! Going camping soon with a tonne of booze and a load of mates in the woods, so weeing regularly isn't an issue :P

Much rather have the gimmicks than all of the "skydiving for charity" bs where majority of what's raised pays for their skydive (replace with another fun activity as appropriate)

What does an actual hangover feel like? That way I know what to expect!
You wake up and for roughly 3 seconds you are numb, it's at this point you know when you move even slightly searing pain will shoot across your body, you lay there for a minute thinking "Oh man, what have a done, when did I go to bed, did I do anything stupid" you open your eyes and suddenly your head explodes with pain "no, no light" you think, you go to open your mouth and realise it is bone dry, you have never experience dry mouth like it, it's as if your tongue is made from cardboard that

Eventually you hoist yourself upright and attempt to stand, it takes you 2-3 times due to dizziness but eventually you make it, on to be overcome by a ridiculous nausea, you make a dash to the toilet, wretch and vomit.

You get a glass of water, although you have barely enough energy to stand, and go back to bed.

Laying there you feel a deep sense of remorse, "Next time I'll be sensible" "What have I done?" nevertheless you lie there, you'd cry but there is barely any moisture left, a greasy sheen of beer and vodka vapours is pushing from your pores. You wish you could just sleep some more but the pain is too great, you lie there and slowly sob with a tv series on in the background, you'd watch if you could, but every time you open your eyes amplifies your splitting headache 10x.

By monday you'll recover, just about, although still tired. Next weekend you'll go out and do it all again.

I did dry January last month, I'm quite a heavy drinker at times and surprised my self at how easy January was (had a bet on with my super healthy mate - think Freefaller but 2ft shorter) and managed to make some money for charity.

I very much agree with you. However, sometimes people needs a challenge to push them over the edge towards something they might want to do, but haven't had the balls to do until that point.
Yes, I understand. It was a blameless rant at the state of affairs, as opposed to ridiculing those who need the encouragement. Probably should have said so in my previous reply. :)

It's not really dehydration you usually need to worry about (though alcohol is a diuretic). The worst bit is you body trying to deal with excess acetaldehyde, which is quite the poison, but unfortunately what we first metabolise alcohol into.

B vitamins, cysteine, lecithin and vitamin C with zinc are where it's at. The zinc to help metabolise the vitamin c, which helps with the cystiene, which is what's used to produce the amino acid (glutathione) with converts the acetaldehyde into acetic acid. Eggs are a good source.

There's a bit more to it than that, but that's the basics. Pints of water before bed are useful for the dehydration (which is never good), but does nothing for your body dealing with the alcohol.

Drinking water through the night helps massively, you may get called numerous names from your mates so it depends if you give a """" or not.

I thought the first thing we metabolise is what gives the actual drunk effect, and once that has been processed, the next thing metabolised is the nasty stuff that makes you feel horrible.

Hence why the hair of the dog works, it switches you back to metabolising the fun stuff, but ultimately just delays the hangover.

I normally go for chips or something dry. My mate had chicken chow mein before a heavy session, the horror that happened afterwards I will never forget.

Seeing noodles and black chunks of chicken over the back of a taxi drivers head will haunt my dreams for eternity.

Seen something similar at a fairground, mate had a few pints and bought some noodles from a stand. Went on this ride where you stand upright against the cage in a big circle. Noodles everywhere, more people being sick because they had sick covered noodles in their face. Hilarious.
