Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Upload on FTTC isn't such an issue because unlike DOCSIS it isn't a broadcast network shared between hundreds of premises.

Upload capacity on cable broadband is constrained because of the way the technology works - in most areas after VM have done their upgrade work they have 2x 20Mbit upstream channels shared between possibly a few hundred premises which is why they have to have fairly aggressive throttling if one customer can use almost a third of the capacity to themselves.

If you upload a lot cable broadband is not good - FTTC is a lot better suited.

I suspect that I won't be the only one to be slightly aghast with incredulity that you could make such a fatuous statement. Please stop being an apologist for VirginMedia.
The service is for whatever you choose to legally do on the internet!

It goes to 65% (it used to be 75%) Your inaccuracies underline your lack of an informed response, and your understanding what is being talked about and what is really going on.
.

Not lack of understanding, just that even as a heavy user I couldn't care less about wether it's 75, 65, 50 whatever.....life is too short and your files are too large lol

Sure the service is for whatever legal activity you want, but they put safeguards in place to stop you effecting others around you, and why not

When I first joined VirginMedia there were no caps. Why? Because the infrastructure could accommodate the usage of it's users on 100Mb/10Mb. Now it simply can not.

For nearly a year my upload was often 80% less than the maximum even at 4am in the morning when you'd have thought not many people were using it. The problem according to VirginMedia was 'over utilisation', at 4am in the morning. This was eventually fixed by them paying more money to put down more nodes to accommodate that so called 'over utilisation'. This could have been done in the first place with better investment and planning. My friend designs telecoms networks and his informed judgement tells me this was the problem.

I totally understand the position that if STM means that more people get a usable internet then it's better for the majority. You are applauding the solution where as I am lamenting the cause. My position is that it was not this way and it did not need to be.

What if your electric company started to introduce caps at peak times or all weekend, or that the electricity would go off around 6pm for 30 mins. You'd soon be a little upset. In this country we don't have that problem because the investment in infrastructure is there. This is not the case in some countries I've been to, with drop outs at peak times. Why? Because the infrastructure is not there and some of these countries have a better GDP than we do!

I was in Latvia and they have 100Mb upload in many places for 'home' users. No caps and why is this? I happened to be at a lunch and talked with someone over there that helped to design their infrastructure. Of the many interesting things he said one is that they made sure that the network will be able to accommodate present and future usage for many years to come.

My biggest gripe with VM is that they didn't do this and are constantly moving the goal posts to stay ahead of the wave when they should be looking at it through binoculars on a hill somewhere.

Just wow, if in this day and age you think that 20-40GB upload usage per month is too much Flukester then you need a reality check. A heavy usage household will use that just with the overheads from streaming netflix never mind anything else.

If i could i would but sadly openreach keep moving the goalposts, hopefully in the next few weeks but i won't hold my breath.

in the SH2 settings I have one ip address in firewall logs and it keeps coming back when reboot the SH2. I don't know who/what it's for, how do I block a ip on a SH2?

What's the IP address?

Post a sample of the log.

Date Time.................................Source IP Target .............Port Number............Count...............Event Description
Mon 21 Oct 10:02 BST...............62.253.131.82................. 68...........................1................... DHCP WAN IP - xx.x.xxx.xxx

when i clear the log it comes back when I reboot the SH2.

btw the xx.x.xxx.xxx = to my ip address.

I justi received this email from VM security team

Dear gareth

Thanks for your report.

The IP address is part of the virgin media infrasctructure and is responding to your superhub 2's DHCP requests.

Kind regards
J Arnold

Hey guys, ive got a problem with my VM connection and im hoping someone might be able to help me. :-)

Ive been with them for about 4-5 months now. Ive only really been on web pages historically, but i made a few skype calls over the past few weeks and the service was horrendous! Ive tried on both wireless and wired...still the same. It seems that my DL speed goes from like 200kbps to like 3Mb and fluctuates continuously like a sine wave.

Seam is the only app that has a DL history in a graph. You get the idea whats going on.

I also got a new amp that has airplay. My music pauses every 10 seconds or so. Its really annoying! totally unusable...both internet and local network traffic.

Ive got a VM super hub (30mb), macbook pro and mini mac, all affected for download/skype issues and airplay. iphone gets issues for airplay too. All devices are in the same room.

Any ideas?
cheers fellas.

i'm having a issue with the SH2 power button. it won't stay clicked in. i'm having to use Blu-tack on it. I called VM yesterday about it and they said it's fine and they won't replace it.

I'd test the speed connected by cable to the SuperHub. Go to Speedtest.net and see what speeds you are getting. I would strongly advise you to call VM and tell them how bad the wifi on your SuperHub 1 is and insist as politely as possible that they send you out a SuperHub 2 free of charge.
Also download and run Inssider and make sure you are the only one in your vicinity that particular channel.

What's the point in paying for a 100mb line when the speed drops to 15mb/s of an evening

Tempted to cancel everything and go back to Sky tbh

Thanks for the advice Wam.

Ive already tried 4 different channels prior to the post and i get the same problem. I get the 30Mb that im contracted on speedtest however the test isn't long enough to see if it drops like you can see of steam. Do you know of a test that i can do over...say...5 mins? with a DL speed graph?
