Force steam to download WHILE playing?

really need my desktop PC to download games etc while i am playing.
I now really only use the pc to play

turn on pc > play> turn off

with a 2megabit connection max i dont really want to just leave the pc on for a day just to download a 70GB of data (thats the current queue)

You can run the game, minimize, then start the download again.

Why not just alt tab out of a game and resume download ,

Yup when you open a game the download will say paused, just rclick to pause ti then continue and it will...

Shame that they changed the default for this, same with multiple downloads at the same time.

i didnt notice this was happening and wondered what was going on after a what turned out to be a 6 hour civ stint (hate that game)
it had restarted by the time i got to that screen, it was only after a couple of times i twigged

It is a shame that they did change it to your only allowed one download at a time especially now when more people have quick internet connections.

I find it quite staggering that they still haven't put an option in to disable the auto-pausing of downloads on game launch - right PITA having to always remember to tab out and resume download.

I think it only stops with online games I think it can be bypassed by tabbing to desktop then pressing resume and going back to game

grr, go to play civ and needs an update, i either leave the computer on all night or turn it on tomorrow and wait.

i really hate how this is now. I much prefer being able to play and choose to update

is there anyway to turn updates off?
This has irked me quite a bit tbh

This not downloading in background
forced updates
not being able to control bandwidth really is a major hate issue for me when it crawls at 100KBps

Have to agree, particularly annoying if you're playing a game which has no online mode. Then it really makes little sense.

Right click on game - properties - update tab, you can alter it there.
