I did it to test the new 2 x 7950s and FX8350@5Ghz setup with the extra mod and looks stunning. While the 64bit version runs like a dream and I wouldn't worry about any "bottlenecks". The game runs only on 2 cores after all and nothing can be done about it other than try to get as close to 5Ghz as possible. Because pure grunt counts.
Also move it to run on the last cores of your CPU not Core 0 or 1, so it will not compete for CPU power with normal processes. (moved it to use the last 4 cores of FX even if it uses only 2)
Also consider the game came out when 8800GTX was the best card you could buy, along with a Core2. And for reference a STOCK 7950 is ~2.4 TIMES faster than a 8800GTX.
For the OP to improve performance, try to crack it to 3.6Ghz at least, if you have a T1090, and get 8GB ddr3 1600.
DDR2 800 is serious drawback.
