Anyone replaced their laptop/desktop with a tablet?

The missus is considering going for a tablet when she replaces her laptop later in the year, and I'm trying to make sure she's not going to regret it!

Anyone done this, ie, using a tablet and phone as your only means of IT/internets? What issues is she likely to run into?

I've a server which she can use to back stuff up onto, so the lack of storage isn't going to be a major issue, not sure if android can nicely mount external storage and perform automated backups. But I'm worried about things like downloading camera pics, typing documents (external keyboard?)

At the moment I'm thinking she'd go for a Tab 3 10.1, but wondering if a Windows 8 model might be a better idea...
 
Depends what you need it for. If you need a device for functionality and work, get a decent laptop. If you want something for browsing and email, then a tablet may be better.

I love the Asus transformer my wife has, but it still can't compete with a laptop for some basic tasks, it's like using a kiddies OS when you need something fully functional.
 
Depends how far down the rabbit hole you go. Android can mount any type of network share going if you're concerned about ext storage and a few have full size USB too. As Scougar says, productivity items are the bane of tablets - excel, word, picture formatting and the like but if you keep an old laptop around to do this then a tablet can replace everything else really.

Edit: I'd wait for the nexus 10 v2 if it's an option.

Spreadsheets would be an absolute nightmare on a tablet. I'm cringing just thinking about it.

Obviously for typing a laptop is better, so really it's just a case of how much content she produces and consumes - for consumption, a tablet is just as good as a laptop (with the obvious portability plus point), but for productivity, even a little netbook will nearly always be better suited (now that they're not all Eee PC-style boxes of plastic with unusable resolutions, 512MB of RAM and a 4GB SSD).
 
I used the original samsung galaxy tab 10.1 for a long time, I thought I didn't need a laptop, but eventually it was only used for watching TV or used by my daughter for watching Futurama episodes before bed. so the laptop made a comeback.

I loved the tablet, but for me its definitely not a replacement.
 
Hadn't even considered spreadsheets, which she uses often for controlling finances etc.

Will have to have a long play before making a decision.
 
i will be once my suface pro 2 gets delivered, but then it's more like an ultratab then a tablet as it's the full windows experience. windows 8 model is 1000 times better of an idea, but make sure it's windows pro and not RT. i honestly feel the pro/windows pro tablets will become the number one device very soon, with the only issue being the price atm, but cheaper alternatives will be out.

+1 for office documents etc Pro is the best way to go, it's kinda a laptop in a way but is the best Hybrid in the market.
 
I used my Sony Xperia Tablet S for work purposes at the end of last year (I am a field sales rep), It was great for everything apart from Spreadsheets! However after purchasing a dongle keyboard and mouse it made things much easier to do.

Obviously you will benefit from great (normally) battery life and media consumption is fab on a tablet, But depending on your budget I would agree with others and say that Windows tabs would be better for Productivity ..

Anyone tried Windows 8.1 RT yet?
 
My girlfriend swapped her laptop for a Surface RT. The day to day stuff she does doesnt warrant a laptop. When she does need it she will borrow one of my machines.

I don't think RT is a bad product they just need to remove the actual Desktop as it causes confusion, but that won't happen until a Metro Office and a Metro File Management system come out, I'm actually considering the Surface 2 for day to day (media consumption mainly)
 
Whilst I honestly cant understand the confusion.

You cant run your desktop programmes on RT, that's it.

You still have FULL office, and all the ease of sorting your files properly with a real explorer.
 
More or less, laptop is used for spreadsheets and pc games. Everything else is tablet.
If i can ever get the money together for the surface 2/lumia 2520, then spreadsheets will be done on the tablet as well. If i can ever get money together for the surface pro 2, then laptop would be sold. Its more than powerful enough to play games on. And more importantly, only one device to take to hotels, rather than laptop and tablet at the moment.
