I went round a family members house today due to they said about having issues with slow system and virgin internet.

Sounded simple until I get there and see very old Pentium 4 HP machine running XP with only 256mb ram yes no wonder it was so slow then the real internet issue was Virgin wouldn't offer any support because the PC doesn't meet there minimum spec plus family member few months ago purchased Windows 8 thinking they could install it on this system lol.

So now I have the task of putting something together for £450 max £500.

Any suggestions for just base unit and monitor (they will be using it mostly for watching videos office stuff plus they said rather then get new console they would like if it could offer some gaming, no os needed the windows 8 they got can be used) thanks in advance

Pay the premium for the G1 sniper A88X board on FM2+. This will leave you an upgrade path and let you use kaveri when it is released.

It is more money but that is a great idea...

It will give you a good path to upgrade and give you loads of overclocking features to get the best out of your CPU/RAM..

..while looking awesome! :D

To be fair boys if they have had a P4 system this long then I can't see them doing any serious upgrades to the system for quite some time ;)

Might be worth asking them if they are open to the idea of running the PC through a HDTV. Not needing the monitor will allow for a better spec for gaming. Sounds like they are looking for more of a HTPC anyways.

I don't see much wrong with the OPs spec. The A8K is a good all round home PC, think I'd use a 500W PSU though. The A8K can do some light gaming (you can OC the APUs IGP) but dropping in a GPU at some point will be needed to rival a console properly.

Just had a little chat with them they will be using it in an office so it wont be near a TV for now (they was open to maybe running a cable into bedroom which is next to office at later period) and upgrade wise they wont be looking at doing anything for easily 3 years (for them they class this as high budget)

That is a nice board sniper one but its fair bit more money plus I can't really see them using what it offers.

The A10K has a better IGP for gaming.

I'd prefer CMs new Elite 130 chassis to be honest. This is mini-itx and the mobo gives you wifi and bluetooth onboard. 430W is fine if just using the IGP, should they feel they will add a dedicated GPU 500W would make more sense.

Best of luck with the build fella.

Do you think Intel build is also an option?

Well you know what they want more than me dude. From what you have said AMDs APUs sound about right. It's good as an allrounder and allows light gaming without the expense of a GPU.

The A8K is good, I've done a lot of builds with it. People say they wont play games but I stick a few on anyway and it soon converts them. A better GPU can be added later, I don't personally bother with the hybrid Xfire.

at least i have 1.5 gb DDR 400 MHZ, Windows 7, Pentium 4, an geforce fx 5200 running(died last week), with the stock virgin media usb wifi adapter at 32mbs ( i am paying 30mbs:D), tried to install windows 8 and said: motherboard does not meet the requirements:mad:, 1k investment now is getting dust:(:(:(:(:(, looking for a replacement at same price range, but include a monitor so £600, look for an 6300 and a 7850, it fits on the budget, i will post later the basket

EDIT:

this will offer more performance for the money, if you want put under the budget get an non modular psu, 4gb of ram is enough if they will do light gaming and house stuff:

overclockable, great monitor, and a bit overkill for what they need now, but enough for keep running for years, and the latest generation of gpu(more or less)

power supplies option( 430w i think is enough)
