sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me is it a true saying?

Names do hurt some people, not physically, but emotionally

Sticks and stones hurt people physically

You cant really comprehend the two, I have never really got that saying, because of this reason.

Doesn't have the same ring to it though does it really

"Sticks and stones may break my bones if someone throws the stone really hard, or if someone hits me hard with a solid wood stick, but names will never hurt me"

Elam Garrik and Dr. Julian Bashir said:
"They broke seven of your transverse ribs and fractured your clavicle."
"Ah, but I got off several cutting remarks which no doubt did serious damage to their egos."
"Garak, this isn't funny."
"I'm serious, doctor! Thanks to your ministrations I'm almost completely healed but the damage I did to them will last a lifetime."

Humans are generally social animals so emotional pain can have quite severe consequences and is generally remembered more than physical pain.

The saying itself tends to be used as either an excuse for not doing anything about a problem or to further belittle someone who is already upset.

Considering most people who grow up to have social anxiety were verbally bullied at school and in their younger years I think it says a lot.
