Is my 6 year old Enermax Infinity 650W enough for a 290X?

That PSU was the best back in 2007 and it is still working perfectly.

My 4770k is at 4.6, also running 2xHDD's, 1xSSD, 3x120mm fans and 2x80mm fans. Is it going to be enough? I'd rather not change it if I don't have to. I am also still undecided about the 290X, might go for a 780 or 780Ti instead (which are less power hungry).

If I really need to upgrade, which one would you recommend? How much does a decent quality PSU cost these days?

Enermax PSU's are great.

Even though the PSU has probably degraded a bit, conservative estimate 25%, it will still leave you over 450W to use, which is more than enough for your system, even overclocked.

I'd only replace it once it gives out, which might be sooner than later :P

Awesome, thanks! :D

ATI says that a 750W PSU is required though, why so much?

Ok, most are saying that a 650W is enough, but mine is 6 years old so it is a different occasion. I guess I will get a card and see if it works and if it doesn't, I'm going to buy a new one.

Would around £140 be enough for a quality 750W? Which ones should I look at?

Look at Corsair, Antecs, and Seasonics.

Beware that Antecs and Corsair have different kinds of series, so read reviews on the individual ones.

The next poster will surely post that you should only buy "Seasonic" internals or Seasonic ones, however I do not share this belief as other PSU's can be just as good.

you can pick up the OCZ 1000w 80+ gold for 140£

Hmm 1000W is too much I think and I will be only using a single card.

Corsair PSU's are popular but I'm reading many complaints about their latest units.

I guess I should wait and see if my Enermax is going to work first before buying a new PSU.

I'd be looking at a XFX, Antec PSU or an Corsair AX/Seasonic PSU if you're looking at spending a little more. All fantastic models and will perform well.

I got a seasonic 650w X recently, so efficient that the fan is inaudible and it's the first psu i've had that's still cool to the touch at the back after hours of use.

Funny thing is, mine is a budget CX600, and it is also inaudible from the rest of the system. Cool as well. No need for Seasonics every time.. :)
