New TV... so much choice :p

I'm currently wondering if it's worth spending a bit more (oh dear!) for something with Frame Interpolation (MCFI).

I do watch a bit of sports (mainly Match of the Day), and there's a lot of reports that MCFI really shines here. Regular 50hz HDTVs can lose a lot of clarity when the camera is panning up and down the pitch, which kind of negates the ponit buying a 1080p HDTV set.

So I'm interested to hear from people with MCFI capable sets, whether you guys like it for sports (or indeed indeed anything else), or whether you turn it off...

There are sets with MCFI starting at £600, not too far off what I'd be spending for 42" E6B or W6.

Just bought a Samsung 42" UE42F5000 for £380

Its great very happy now, plays MKVs direct, minimal motion blur ( I had to take a Panasonic TXP42X60B back due to the motion blur being unplayable in COD ).

Really happy, I think you would be nuts spending a fortune on a new TV when 4K will be mainstream in a few years.

I think the uptake of 4k is still years away. Look how long Sky dragged its feet over HD... many channels still broadcast in SD too, so I'm not giving 4k any weight in my decision making at all.

Have to buy what's available today, not worry about what might come in the next decade ;)

Went down to Currys today. Everything has now changed :p

Some things I took from my visit:
  • SD looks like butt on all HDTVs. Unavoidable. Even worse on 46"+.
  • Frame-rate Interpolation is a *must*. 50hz looks awful side-by-side with a MCFI set. So much judder it's painful to watch. I want all my films, football, and regular TV to be super-smooth. If this is what people call the 'soap opera' effect, then I *love* soap operas :p
  • At least 50% of the LG sets had horrible backlight bleed, and horrible IPS glow. They seem to be by far the worst for this.
  • Samsung make some beautiful TVs ;) Me likey. The F6400 stood out.
  • My original budget is way out and needs revising upwards.
  • I can go larger than 42", but not larger than 50". 46" may be the sweet spot.

So here's my new criteria, if anyone would like to help 'Spec me a TV' :)

Size: 42" - 50". Quality over quantity here tho.
Price: Up to £800. Soundbar will cost me £200 and want to keep the total spend < £1000.
MCFI essential. Backlight pulsing is not good enough.

I would like decent blacks, and will avoid any set with moderate to high backlight bleeding, or glow in the corners.

Bought the UE46F6500 after a lot of research. Cost £700.
And another £200 for a YAS-101 soundbar.

And now I have to convince Sky to give me an HD box free, and pay them an extra £10 a month for the privilege of watching HD... doh!

the YAS 101 is closer to the £150 mark.

i got mine from tesco direct using some vouchers and stuff easily found online (hotukdeals) for just over £150.

price is £169 iirc on most sites, if your paying £200 your not looking at the right places.

i got a sky+ hd box off gumtree for £25 including a wireless connector which alone retails for £20 from sky.

if sky don't give you one for free just buy one off anybody and pair it yourself using your sky account and the sky website.

then phone up to enable recording if you need to.

The price for the YAS-101 is £200 everywhere currently. I did have a good look, nothing on HUKD for it either. Still, I got the TV cheap, it's £800 in Currys and £750 in most online places.

Looks like Sky have changed their HD prices too, I'm paying £27 currently for EE, EE+ includes all the HD channels for £32.

Result :) Upgraded to Sky+HD 2TB box for £49, and now paying £28.50 pm for everything except Movies and Sports.

For once that's a better deal than new customers can get.
