Specifically - welding engineer - serious salary inflation going on with this at the moment, they are rarer than rocking horse s*** ;)
 
On a serious note, those people who go round weighing meerkats*, they are researchers, and I'm guessing they definitely do have degrees and PHDs and doctorates. But what in...?
PhDs in biology for the most part, also geography, maybe earth science...
The actual science requires the PhDs, but there are lots of related roles in logistics, support, filming, eco-tourism etc. if you actually want to get out in the field.
 
You don't come across as particularly interested or committed in this line of work, are you doing this because of money earning potential or a genuine life calling?
If it's the former I'd walk away, if the latter then go for it.

I'm honestly not fussed about the money. And anything has to be more interesting than 2nd-line IT, right? :p

What are you expecting me to be committed to, exactly? I'm just curious what opportunities are out there, really.
