A couple of days ago I had a minor bump in my car and hit the car infront at a couple of mph - very minor damage so I offered to pay myself rather than involve insurance. I just wondered if anybody had any advice on how to go about this with the other driver in such a way that he has no comeback afterwards?

He said he wants £200 to cover the cost of a new bumper but I get the impression he wants the money upfront and probably won't even bother to repair the damage - this doesn't particularly bother me aslong as this doesn't affect my insurance but I can't help worrying that he will screw me for a whiplash claim or something afterwards

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers

I had a similar incident a year ago. There was literally 0 damage to his car but obviously he wasn't best pleased but I wasn't willing to pay any cash so I gave him all of my insurance details. I was worried thinking that my insurance would increase massively but after running many, many quotes with a small fault accident to my name, they were no more expensive. Admiral, who I was with at the time, even quoted me £110 cheaper with the claim on there?!

Suffice to say, I never heard anything from the guy so he mustn't have even bothered after examining the damage.

I'd imagine if anything they'd lie and claim whiplash which would ruin 6 years no claims, this is what I'm worried about. The actual damage to his car should cost less than my excess which is why I don't mind paying for it.

Just handing over £200 leaves me exposed to them still claiming though

You still need to inform your insurers even if you do not claim (it will state that on your policy) as if the sudden whiplash occurs they will be involved then.

Protected no claims?
Was there actually any damage to his car?
Pics or any proof it actually happened? Witnesses?

My no claims aren't protected. No witnesses and no pictures taken. The damage was mainly to my car but there was a small crack in his bumper as it looks like there was some sort of metal behind it that was forced through.

Surely by informing insurers I'll have to say yes to "involved in any accidents" and pay an increased rate even without making a claim. If that's going to happen I might aswell let them deal with it as it's £2-300 worth of repairs on my own car that I'd be covering too (which would probably be doubled with new parts fitted by a garage)
