Stolen items from my luggage returning from New York...

To answer one of your questions, yes, a GoPro is A/V kit.

Otherwise sucks! Hope you get something sorted. I didn't think you were allowed Lithium batteries in hand luggage so you could argue that's why it was kept in hold, though they'll probably just come back and say it should have been split up. Good luck!

muon - Yes, British Airways wont cover for electrical equipment in checked luggage :(

Russinating - Thanks for the info, I've just sent email to my travel insurance company stating that so will see what they come back with :)

Malecolence - You read my mind :) Just looking into it now. I need to fill out a form and pop it in the post. Its weird because not everything was taken, just plastic bags ripped open. Also, the padlock wasn't broken, so must have been picked? Weird :(

Every laptop, phone and tablet has a lithium battery

If it's a zip up suitcase, a padlock is a waste of time. You can open it up with a pen/pencil pretty quickly. Probably attracted attention tbh.

Why oh why did you put this in your checked baggage? :(
Never put any valuables in your suitcase!

As above, it could've been the TSA. They can bust into your case if they feel like it.
And then someone had a nosey after it was busted open legitimately at a later time.

I don't normally padlock my suitcase to prevent access, as I'm sure those little padlocks would break from a small breeze! I normally padlock it to stop someone opening it on the sly, or from it just opening by itself.

Or if it's a TSA approved lock all you need is the master key, fairly freely available no doubt. Padlocks (especially TSA approved ones) will at best put off the opportunist thief (doubt there are many of them at an airport...) and at worst will allow someone to steal things out of your bag without you knowing (open it, then lock it again, whereas the pen trick will usually leave signs)...

I left my combination lock's unlocked when came back from USA - when they came off carousel they were locked - got home and there was TSA label inside saying they had a look.

I had the TSA open my luggage on the way back from LA Years ago. That said I did have my brand new Greddy boost controller so I could see that it would look dodgy on the Xray machine. A small box with loads of wires coming out of it lol. Other than that all they would have gotten was a look at my dirty pants.

I brought a frying pan back from Florida last time I was there (don't ask why the hell I did that!) and my suitcase was opened. Presumably the metal looked rather concerning through their scanners.

The OP obviously is aware of this now, but never put anything in your hold baggage that you won't be too concerned with if it disappears or is damaged.

It was probably the people taking the cases off the plane in the US.

My old man tried to bring back some American snacks that you can't get over here. Case was opened his case in the UK and they were all gone. It has happened 2 or 3 times in the last 12 months.

Just to add, the food was taken out and the empty packaging was put back in the case!
