I'm off to Thailand in a month so need to source a few item including a backpack.

I'd like something with lockable zips, on the main compartment at least and one which will be the right dimensions to fit as a carry on (55 x 38 x 20cm approx)

I'm only going for three weeks so believe a 40l will be big enough and give me the flexibility to keep the bag with me on any flights I take.

Any help would be great :)

I personally have a 42 litre North Face Base Camp Small duffel bag, which has straps for carrying it on your back. I've taken it as hand luggage and it fits perfectly into the hand-luggage-sizer things.

You should go into a camping shop and try one which feels comfortable if you plan to be carrying it a lot.

It's raining quite a bit at the moment here, so that might be worth taking into account too.

Lockable zips are meant to be defeated by a pen, so just make sure valuables are always with you.

Lowe Alpine TT Carry on 40ltr. Used it before on my travels. Fit a surpising amount in it. Clamshell design. Can lock main compartment.

Don't, a thief will simply cut the bag open with a knife. You should keep valuables on you - those little document holders that you can wear under your clothes are useful.

That said, Thailand is relatively safe and low in crime.

It's not so much thieves that you might want to protect yourself against with locks, it's inadvertently trafficking things for other people ...

Exactly this. If someone wants to take something from my bag no lock will stop them but it's a good way of knowing if your bag has been tampered with.

Osprey. The end. Taken them everywhere, Himalaya, Andes, China, you name it. If you want a duffle type bag the aforementioned NF basecamp is the standard. Mine is the 155Litre variant though :o

I've got one of the highlander forces 44 rucksacks.
So far it's seemed to be very comfortable and well built. Much better zips than my karrimor wildcat as they're oversized.

If you're not into the whole camo thing I think it comes in olive too.

Do you think think you could trek with the Osprey 40L? (i understand you had the 155L) I think it would be a push to trek with the Lowe Alpine 40L, but possible.

I took an army surplus 40 litre day bag around Morocco for 3 weeks this summer, Was perfect, didnt fall apart and took a good beating on the public transport and had the effect of keeping the touts away from me.

I would not buy anything other than an Osprey again. My mate has a Berghaus one and it looks horrendous after not- that- much use and is very heavy empty...
