780 or 290x

I have a gigabyte windforce 780 coming today for BF4. Depends on noise and cooling really, can your case handle the heat, can you handle the noise?

With the free games and the 780 now being cheaper, I would go for a 780. They will both perform great in BF4 and I expect when Mantle is released in December, the 290X will have the better frames. The beta performed very well on a 780 and unless you are anal about having the fastest and watching the fps all the time, you wouldn't notice what was in your machine, so for price and free games, go for the 780 :)

You can always sell the games as well, which would make the card around £50 cheaper.

No brainer. At current prices and if you aren't intending to watercool, just get an OC version of a 780. Only £350 ish when you sell the games.

Unless you want to buy today, I'd wait a couple of days for the 290. The 290X is expensive at the moment. The heat/noise of the 290X is being overstated.

You seam to be leaning to a 290X and looking for confirmation Jon.... Go for it. It is a great card and performance is there. Ignore the heat and noise things you are reading, as it is just payback for the GTX 480 launch :D

Fact is though, after selling the games a pre overclocked 780 matches a 290x for around £70 less. You also get the advantage of a cooler, quieter and less power hungry card to boot.

Only fly in the ointment is mantle but you will have to wait till December to see if that makes much difference..

True audio and support out the box for DX11.2 are also worth a mention. They are great selling points on the 290 series.

Right now go for the 780, its the cheaper of the two and the reference cooler on the 290X is not to good, with board partners coolers a little way off yet.

I think if I was playing BF4 I would probably prefer the R9 290 or even a cheap R9 280X or HD7970GE card. The thing is if Mantle gives a 20% boost in framerates, then the R9 280X or HD7970GE would be the best value for money cards for BF4. People forget that NVAPI was used in BF3 which is much less far reaching than Mantle might be,and that helped Nvidia have a decent performance with much older cards when compared to AMD for quite a while in BF3,even with the latter having much newer cards(GTX580 vs HD7970). You can see what happens if a game ends up well optimised for AMD cards too in DiRT:Showdown where a HD7970GE matches a Geforce Titan. Another case of a much older card doing well against a newer one.

We shall soon find out how Mantel shapes up in less than three weeks though.
