Thinking of picking up a Porsche 944, what should I look out for?

So I'm thinking of picking up a Porsche 944 as a bit of a fun car for weekend use and the odd commute here and there. I have got about £3K to spend on one which, from the looks of it, should get me a nice oval dash 2.5 Lux 8v/2.5s 16v/2.7. I'm not looking to get an S2 or turbo as for some reason I can't seem to get classic insurance on them. Plus in my price range I don't think I would be able to get a nice one.

Has anyone got any experience in running one of these and any tips on what I should look out for when buying one?

The one I am hoping to see at the weekend is this: http://www.1stchoicecars.uk.com/cla...assive-history-file-really-well-cared-for-ex/

Can't offer any meaningful advice but looks very tidy for its age and mileage! They can't be original seats surely?! A mate had a S2 as a track car, was a fantastic drive.

I think black looks really good. Go for it.

Old pics, but this was my red 944, with fatter wheels on than stock. Absolutely loved it. Shame I wrote it off. :p

My dad had a 944 cabriolet in guards red and it's was absolutely lovely.

Loads of pace, amazing handling and lovely seats. The standard wheels are a bit poop looking but.....

My dad sourced his through the Porsche owners club and his was bang tidy. He paid 11k about 6 years ago.

There are a load if complete sheds out there so buy wisely.

See it's now sold. Did you go for it?

I had a black 924s (944 engine) up until a couple months ago when i broke the engine drifting the thing.

just last night i was looking at a picture and thinking how much i miss it already. I bought a supra to replace it and its a lot less fun.

Things i would look for when buying another would be the cam belt, if it hasn't been done in a few years or mileage is high defiantly get this done. Its not that expensive, i paid £400 for it include replacing the water pump which was about £150 of that cost. Leaky sunroofs can be a problem. otherwise they are pretty reliable and rust free.

Also never go to an owners club meeting - the one i went to was completely full of bores :P

(this picture that made me nostalgic :P)

?

944's can rust like mad on the rear outer and inner sills? More to the point when the S2 engine gets to around 120k onwards porsche specialist would recommend that you get the cams inspected for wear and probably replaced.

Lots to go wrong with the 944, particually if it's a turbo, nothing is too expensive provided you do the work yourself, but once you get someone like Hartech involved and want to get the car up to a good standard, that soon changes.

I went through all this with a Guards Red 1991 S2 a while back, the future work required to keep the car in great shape was quite expensive considering how much the car was worth.

May be a little late, but I wouldn't recommend the garage you linked....

Went there to see an MGB and the car was COMPLETELY different to how it was described, the salesman was arrogant, pushy and clueless.

It may be nothing to worry about, and you may have a different experience but it did not fill me with confidence at all.

Just my experience ;)

Thanks for all the advice guys. No, I didn't buy the one that I linked to as it had sold by the weekend :(. I'm hopefully going to look at an S2 this weekend as I have found I can get classic insurance on one. I'm going to guess by the price (£3600) however that it will need some work :S.

Well the one that I was going to see this weekend has also been sold :(. Back on the lookout now for a nice S2.
