AMD R9 290 – GTX 780 Level Performance at $450 (279,66 GBP)

£370ish is surely too close to 780 territory though?

I totally agree, my estimate was based on the 290x launch price, with the 780 reductions that's now thrown the cat among the pigeons given you can get a 780 for under £400 now.

I think the 290 needs to come in at say 325-350 and the 290x needs to be reduced to £400

?? I don't get that.

Just saying what I was told by owner the review site I work for - and what he had been informed of.

Could be sorting out a nice games package :)

I'm looking forward to the next couple of months, really hoping theres some nice deals and price drops coming our way as i'd like to upgrade something!

That being said i played Tomb Raider on max settings last night and my 7950 loved it, was quite impressed by how much grunt that GPU has. Just hope BF4 plays nicely with it for a month or so :D

With my 2500k overclocked and an overclocked GTX 480, you would be surprised how good everything is. These older generation stuff are still surprisingly good. The area where they fall down now is lack of memory for all the extra effects that are used and massive textures etc.

I've been holding off for 6 months now, AMD are shooting themselves in the foot by delaying YET AGAIN when 780s are bottoming out in price.

I think this is officially the worst most frustrating launch ever.

I perceive it as a brilliant time. It's finally very exciting in the graphics market again, with proper competition, a load of new features and frankly, shockingly quick cards with massive amounts of memory. No one forced you to wait to make a purchase, and who (as a consumer) on earth would complain at tumbling prices?

As an aside, if you now have a 4GB or greater card, then you really need better than 8GB system ram.

Depends on the reason for the delay (again). I think if they are really bringing out a decent new Never Settle Bundle, then the 1 week delay could be forgiven I guess; if the 1 week delay is just for them for try to squeeze more performance out of driver improvement for standing better again the Nvidia's new cards but no free games, I'd not be impressed.

If the 290 comes in at ~£330, it makes today's price dropped 770's and 780's look a pretty mediocre deal. I think NVidia have dropped prices to clear as much stock as possible at reasonable margins before the 290 hits next week??? and forces far bigger cuts. 770's can certainly drop a long way further, after all it wasn't so long ago 670's were being flogged for £170. How far the 780's will drop will be interesting, and I wonder whether the faster TI part will come in at ~£450 levels to take the battle to 290X.

Prices are getting pretty competitive now that AMD are competitive again.

Personally after the HD79xx debacle I would rather they got the drivers working good before releasing the card, otherwise you will once again have all the early reviews invalidated, people who made purchase decisions annoyed, bugs, etc.

IT WON'T BE UNDER £300 or £300!

R280X is £220 - £280.

R290X is £420 - £500

R290 which offers more or less R290X performance and better when overclocked shall be priced to fit between the above in a logical manner.

£349 Inc. VAT IF WE ARE LUCKY, expecting it to be higher to be honest.

Even if the rumour of $449 MSRP is correct, the UK price would work as follows:-

$449 / 1.60 = £280.63 + TAXES & SHIPPING etc.

So the very best price in the UK would be £337.20 Inc. VAT, we rarely get the best price and hence £349 Inc if we are lucky.

To be frank at £379 it will blitz of the shelves like crazy, this thing has R290X performance ability and beyond when overclocked putting it above Titan performance. £379 would be a bargain, anything lower and it will just sell even more mental.

A 780 with a slight OC has titan and 290x performance so this 290 with a reference cooler is going to be hardsell versus the 780 with non ref cooling and free games.
