1080p/120HZ vs. 1440p/60HZ

Hey guys, I'm looking for some opinions and/or advice on which monitor I should get. I recently purchased a new GPU (HD 7990) and to get most out of it I want to upgrade my monitor, I currently have a 24" @ 1920 x 1200. 60hz

So to take advantage of my new GPU I was considering getting a 27" @ 1440p so I could run games at a higher resolution.

I play all types of games but I play A LOT of Team Fortress 2 so would I be right in saying I would benefit more from getting a 120hz or even a 144hz monitor?

So what would you suggest, get a monitor with a higher resolution or smaller monitor with a faster refresh rate? (predominantly for one game)
 
Realistically you're playing Team fortress 2. It doesn't matter what monitor you get, 120 or 60hz the only difference is going to be if you want a larger resolution.

I've got the Asus VG278HR(144hz) and compared to my BenQ GW2760(60hz) secondary monitor you literally can't see any difference in those types of games.

In all honesty though if you're primarily playing TF2 I don't know why you bought a 7990 in the first place.
 
Like i say i play ALL games, TF2 being the game i play on a daily basis.
The reason i bought the 7990 is that i was due an upgrade and that card was on sale at i price i'd be stupid pass up.
 
Well, he said ALL games, and only really FPS benefits from 120hz in any meaningful way. The other genres, along with general desktop usage benefit from the extra res and assumed colours provided by IPS.

My eyes aren't the best I'll admit, but I only honestly see the difference in refresh rates in very new games, and even then unless you can actually maintain the 1:1 fps to hz ratio i feel its better off just lowering refresh and going higher on details/res
 
120 Hz for FPS games makes a large difference IMO. But for general day to day usage and any other games the increased IQ and colours on a 27" IPS 1440 screen is more desirable. I couldn't choose between them so I've got both :D.

I swap in the 1080 120 Hz monitor for games like BF3/4 and the like.
 
I've not really played TF2 but playing similiar games online there is no way I'd take a 60Hz panel over a 120Hz panel - infact tons of games that aren't twitch shooters I prefer the responsiveness and smoother feeling of 120Hz.

EDIT: Like above though I've ended up going multi-monitors so as to get the best of both worlds.
 
People talking about multi monitors. Are you guys saying you use both kinds of monitors in a dual monitor setup? I.e. one monitor for gaming the other for non twitch games?

My current setup I'm using 2 laptops and 3 monitors - one laptop is setup for general internet, photoshop, programming, etc. etc. and connected to a Samsung PLS based panel (main) and also to a Dell U2913WM the 2nd laptop (one in my sig) I'm currently using for gaming is connected to a BenQ XL2420T (main - fps gaming, etc.) and also to the Dell U2913WM (for single player games) - then keyboard and mouse is connected up via a KVM.
 
I tried both, only use my 27 for my Mac now. After 2 years of 120Hz, FPS games just didn't look right, plus I had less performance. If you are serious about FPS, go 120Hz

As much as i'd like to have two monitors for gaming, i can't really afford it. I think I'm going to go for the bigger screen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there currently aren't any 1440p monitors that do 120hz.
