Moving To England And Need Advice

I guess the thing is, and I'm probably generalizing, but outside of London I see England more as having a "country style", with beautiful old buildings and quaint little shops and bakeries.

ahahahahaha we all don't live in a Castle, we don't know the Queen. I have never met Paul McCartney.

You are in for a real shock when you land in the UK.

How have you not heard of Cambridge? or the M4 corridor?

Cambridge is where ARM are based

The other factor which may be a problem: moving from the US will you be able to even afford a house here? Our property market is far more expensive than that of the USA in most areas.

If hes moving to the South West and working atleast an OK IT job rent or mortgage on a house will be fairly affordable, with some exceptions its probably fairly comparable to the US in terms of house prices around here.

I can think of a 1000 other countries better to move to than this crapper

Really? Really? It's got to be in the top 10 places to live and work.

Most big business is in the London area. There will be good opportunities in outsourcing companies which may base themselves outside of London.

It sounds like you are currently aiming for helpdesk 2nd line support which you will find many mid size companies and above will be looking to hire all over the country.

If you enjoy overcrowded roads, poor wages, lack of jobs, unhappy people and bad weather then the UK is great.

IT in Cornwall will be non-existent. I used to live in the Dorset area and the further West you go the less IT is about. Bristol will be your best bet.

I emigrated and never looked back. Before giving everything up, I'd suggest you send the wife back for a few weeks to see if she just has rose tinted glasses. One great thing about the UK is these forums, but they can be used from anywhere!

Everyone in London will be really pleased to see a new stranger in the City, make sure you introduce yourself to everybody you meet and tell them you're an American and new in town. You'll fit right in and the people there will bend over backwards to make you feel welcome!

Take unpaid leave for 3 months and try to live here... Tell us where u from in states that would help a lot...

If you are from Northern states and live in a city or in suburbia you wont get that much of a cultural shock... Just get used to the idea that your house will be smaller and your car will most likely be a diesel.

If you are from Southern states (apart from Florida) , god help you.

There are certainly more prosperous countries, countries with better education, countries with better healthcare, countries with better roads, countries with better crime rates etc etc

However, we have a lot of good things, just not the best of everything. I'd undoubtedly have a better lifestyle if I lived in Italy but I wouldn't earn what I do and there would be crazy Italians everywhere amongst other numerous disadvantages. Prague is a fantastic city but to live there would be unimaginable compared to the UK.

Australia/NZ and the US and some parts of Canada are probably the only places with enough "stuff" to compete for a Brit looking to leave. Even then, its a bit difficult to know for sure.

I reckon those with the lists of places they would rather live have probably never seen what the reality is like there, have a crap job in a crap town or are a bit dim. There is hardly a place I visit where I don't think to myself "wow, I'm lucky to have been born into the life I'm living".

By the way, the UK has NICE weather.

No earthquakes, no floods (not compared to Bangladesh, no hurricane like Katrina, no humidity like the Amazon jungle, no sandstorms, no 5 months of snow like parts of Canada.

People moved to Australia for its weather, then they moan about it being too hot. Honestly, its not the weather, it is never about the weather, but moaning about the weather is a british past time.

Like Indian for its weather? How about the hurricane the size of FRANCE that hit it a few weeks ago?

Like Scandinavian countries? If you think a week of snow is bad, try 5 months of it.

I dont agree with that.

UK has very flat weather its neither hot or cold unless gulf brings something for day or 2...

Good weather is when its hot in summer and there is snow in winter so at least you feel the seasons.

Do you not remember those threads EVERY year people moaning about its too hot?

And all those threads every year people moaning about the snow?

Oh yeah! Doh!

Out of interest, how hard is it to emigrate to the UK say from the US? Going the other way (UK to US) is quite a task isn't it? Is it as difficult to go the way the OP is coming?

People who make it from UK to USA without a contracted job, should receive a medal... Its ridiculous... Its like starting from 0, no credit rating no one gives you anything at all... renting a place out is a nightmare.

USA isnt a country which is immigrant tolerant at all....

Dont get me started on USCIS and filling incomes, its death.

The trick is to get in as a student and then find an american girlfriend. ;)
