Does anyone else sense that meat-eating is on the way out?

I think in 100-200 years our descendants will look back at us in shame the way we look back at slavery and racism/sexism today. "What were they THINKING?!".

I reckon meat eating is on the way out and animals will have their civil rights moment like black people and women did. When you are really old you'll still get away with eating the odd bit of meat that you managed to illegally import from shady countries, or killed/butchered yourself... "oh he's just OLD, ignore him, things were different in his day". Then by the next generation it will be totally banned.

People will be like "can you believe you used to be able to buy meat over the counter back then??". It would be the equivalent of a class A drug, but more taboo.

We'll have cruelty-free synthetic "meat" to eat by then made in factories by genetically engineered algae or something like that. Eating real animal meat will be akin to what cannibalism is today. Then in another few thousand years we will lose the gut flora and enzymes to even digest real meat. Just my predictions.

No if we go by your logic looking back over time meat has always been important even cavemen? I think the meat has been more refine in terms of farming methods!

If anything it can go abit demolition man and we may eat rat burgers lol

Actually, yes. In 100 to 200 years I think that the eating of animals will be very much a 'niche' thing, and may even be illegal in certain countries.

HOWEVER - this will absolutely not occur until there is a viable artificial alternative. So far we have been able to grow artificial meat only in very thin strands, with a big difference in taste, texture and colour from the real thing. The small strands can be clumped together to make a burger, but that's about it. To make larger structures will require some kind of artificial circulatory system - this is the next stage in the R&D process for artificial meat generation.

Remember - the arguments against eating meat are not just based on moral factors; it takes a lot more energy to produce a given calorific value of meat than crops. As the population grows and global sustainability becomes a bigger issue, this is something that will need to be considered.

For what it's worth, I'm a meat eater, and I love it :D I won't be giving up meat any time soon. But in the not too distant future, as technology advances, I think it will be something that we consider as a civilisation.

... as for "looking back in shame", no I don't think so. The animal kingdom has been eating each other since time immemorial. And the suggestion of losing "gut flora" to digest "real" meat seems a bit far fetched. Do you have any reason to think that a different set of bacteria would be required for artificial meat?!

I think it will

It makes sense. Gradually it will be seen as barbaric
I am eating more and more meat alternatives as I just can't turn a blind eye to it anymore
If alternatives taste as good then I will choose the alternative.
Also, quorn sausages taste amazing

I'm far far from a hippy but just like animals and feel empathy towards them I guess.

Like posted, you only have to look back to see exactly how these things have panned out. Women, racism, etc etc all thought as right at the time with growing minorities against them that eventually get theirway

Perhaps it's my age, but people seem to be less MEAT MEAT MEAT these days. I even opted for vegetarian pizza recently... and not for concern of health!

I can't see there being any big revolution style change but in the long term future I can see a movement away from animal meat and towards synthetic substitutes.

The current trends towards higher sugar and carbs and away from proteins and fats isn't good at all though.

Human beings are omnivores. To not eat meat is to deny your nature. Nothing wrong with meat eating, it's natural and healthy in a balanced diet.

NO no no no no and no...

Basically, if we aren't eating them, then why on earth would we be farming them? We wouldn't breed them and they'd die out. End of. No animal rights on the scale you're thinking

"Using his burgeoning intelligence, this most successful of all mammals has exploited the environment to produce food for an ever increasing population.
Instead of controlling the environment for the benefit of the population, perhaps it is time we control the population to allow the survival of the environment."

Could be your age. But maybe it's just because with vegetables there's less chance anything will go 'wrong'.

I hardly ever eat meat either and also order vegetarian pizza because the meat from pizza places is ****. If I do have meat, I'll have it at a decent restaurant, thank you.
