Building a System for my Brother - £500 budget

Hi all,

My brother has asked me to build him a new system. He has just started a 3d animation and design course at university and his laptop simply doesn't have the power to run some of the software he needs.

He doesn't need a monitor, keyboard or mouse etc and I he can get a copy of Windows 8.1 from MSDNAA.

So I've got a £500 budget to just build him a tower, I think a Nvidia card would probably suit him better as a lot of the software has support for hardware acceleration when using a Nvidia card.

Ideally I'd like to overclock his system so that he'll get more bang for his buck so that's a factor along with the gpu.

No real preference on anything else, he would like to do a little bit of gaming on it as well but it's not a priority.

I'd appreciate some advice on what to pick up for him

Any reason in particular for Piledriver over a Haswell cpu?

Your budget.
An Intel "K" chip, if you want to OC, is about £170.

But if you have access to the MM, you could probably get him a better system.

Yeah that's very true budget wise.

I'll have a look on MM and see if I can pick up anything.

You should be able to pick up an i5 SB/IB K chip for just over a £100, but you need to check regularly, as they go pretty quick.
