Hey, was wondering if anyone could answer the following questions for me?

I'm looking at changing my original I9300 S3 for a N5 but am looking at a few things regarding value etc.

The N5 is £299 now but roughly what do people think it maybe worth in a year? I keep my phones normally a year or no longer than 18 months. I always buy and don't bother with a long drawn out contract.

I purchased a HTC desire back in 2010 for around £330 i think, a year later the best I could get was £142, in 2012 I bought the galaxy s2 again that was around £350 in july 2011 and a year later I sold it to my oldman for £180. My S3 was £370 last July and this is looking at being worth around £150.

Now I don't want to buy a new N5 and it be worth peanuts a year later like what seems to be the case with the N4, how much was the N4 when it came out?.

I know you lose money on anything second hand obviously but as stated i don't want to buy something that is going to be worth bugger all, is it the case with nexus phones that they just drop like a stone in value after some time?

thanks again

In 12 months? It'll probably be half the price it is new.

If Google later discount the price further then it could be even less.

Nexus 4 was £239+del and £279+del when it came out.

A couple of months ago Google cut the prices to £159+del and £199+del respectively.

Used? The price is probably £150 for a mint condition 16GB version.

As mentioned in previous post, Nexus devices don't have the best resale value (not many phones do, iPhones are probably the best for resale, Samsung if its Android) and Google will eventually in a year or so discount it. So you may get half or even less than that.

Nobody knows for sure but I would think looking at the Nexus 4 prices should give you a good guide. I guess it depends how you sell it, you'd probably get more selling it privately but somewhere like Muzuma are only giving £85 for a Nexus 4 (same price for both 8gb and 16gb).

Sure they don't hold their value as well but are much cheaper to start with, cba to do the maths but I can't imagine you're much worse off.

Technology doesn't hold its value unless as has been said it's something like an iPhone or Mac.

Speaking about resale value of iPhones holding up better than the nexus... can anyone comment how much (in £) iPhone value drops after 12 months?

I reckon iphones halve as well after 12 months. It's just that since they are £500+ to begin with, they still have significant resale value.

The s4 wasn't far off that at launch which was only 7ish months ago and you're already only liking at £240ish for it.

I suppose the other thing with the iphone is that keep incrementally increasing the price of the phone which helps keep the value of older phones.

5S is now £549-£709.

£240 for GS4? You can get much more than that. £300 I reckon.

S4 is much more than £240. The recycle shops are offering £240-260 for it so private sale should fetch £300+

Privately selling an iPhone will get an even better price.

From my experience iPhones retain their value the best over a period of time, ofc they lose their value but not as much as other phones. This is mainly because Apple sort of set a single price structure across the board and retailers have little or no flexibility to lower the price.

You would be better off keeping them for longer. It's not just the drop in value you are seeing, you are also going from new to used. The auctions for working S2s all seem to go for £120+ now and July 2012 was a long time ago.

The best recycle price is £235, considering it can be bought brand new in box for £380 I think selling privately you might just touch £300 and if you decide to sell on eBay you'd be better off recycling it.

someone mentioned that the nexus's are cheaper to begin with, probably is the case it's just I don't fancy paying £300 for a phone now and if say in 12 months max it's worth £80 it's like whats the point of even selling it lol.

If it were worth £150 then fair enough but it will probably be around 120 i reckon.

I want one but still deciding, Is it worth it going from a S3?

The n4 is currently worth 150, that's not a probably, it came down because the actual retail price came down. So whatever Google do will likely be the price.

If you buy an N5 and keep it 2 years you'll get your moneys worth out of it more than if you keep changing phones every 12 months. Also its much more of a worth while upgrade after 2 years!
