Asus matrix platinum 7970 installation problem

Hi,

I recently purchased the above graphics card from overclockers website and I'm having an issue where only one set of power LEDs are lit up green and the other red.

I'm upgrading from a Radeon HD 5770 with a CM silent pro 700W PSU. So I'm sure I have enough juice!

I'm currently using an 8-pin pci-e power cable from the psu straight into the gfx card slot which is displaying the green light. This same cable has a 6-pin coming off it which I then attached a 6 to 8-pin adapter (which was provided with the card) straight into the second slot which is
Showing up red and thus producing the no display signal. Do I need a separate second 8-pin pci-express cable coming from the psu directly or should the method I'm using work?

Sorry for lack of technical know how, any help would be very much appreciated. I can provide any other details which might help.

I'm using the i7 ocuk krypton overclocked bundle @ 4.0ghz (not sure if that would suck up the power).

Mobo = GA-X58A-UD3R

Thanks :)

It's a fairly big single rail PSU so should be ok. Have you tried running another cable direct from the PSU to the other power connector on the card? The PSUcomes with (apparently) PCI-E 6+2 Pin x2

no no no

you need to use a 2 separate pci e 6 pin cables to the adaptor. it has two heads because some gpus (680gtx for example) only take 6 pins so you would use it there. but you cant use both at the same time.

The problem is I only have the one cable which comes from the psu, which came with the power supply or previous graphics card, can't remember. All that came with the matrix is an adapter : ( can't seem to find a cable that I require on the overclockers website either. Thanks for the quick reply

Any chance you would know where I can find such a cable? Had no joy so far. Thanks for the help.

you sure you have it connected in the right socket? can you upload a picture?

this is mine

the purple is the adapter from the graphics card. ive plugged into the yellow and black cable (not the one with brown)

Can I just ask something. My 2 PCI-E power cables for my PSU are both split into 1x6pin and 1x6pin with an extra 2pin that can be connected to make it an 8 pin connector. If I get a graphics card that requires 1x6 pin and 1x8 pin connector, can I use the one power cable for that? Or do I need to use the 6 off one cable and the 8 (6+2) off a separate cable?

Also if I bought a card that requires 2x8pin connectors, are you saying that I couldn't just stick a 6 to 8 converter on each 6pin and instead I would have to connect both cables to the psu and use the 8pin (6+2) from each one?

Thanks.

(I have the same gpu as you btw although this is probably irrelevant)
If i've understood you correctly you are using one cable that's leading off the psu that has an 8 pin and a 6pin coming of it?

If yes then you need to use another cable like that, that one cable should not be used as a double connection. Some psu's have one cable that has a 6 or 8 pin connection leading off to suit the users need. Wheras other psu's like mine and I believe most others? have a cable that has a 6 pin connection with the option of 2 pins leading off to join making it into an 8.

So in summary from what I see you need another pci-e power lead. If you only have one on your psu then you should have a spare molex connector you can get a molex to pci-e for.

Surprised you guys managed to get it running on one 6 pin connection to that 8pin adaptor.

It is designed to take 2 6pin connections into the one 8pin on the card thus ensuring you have enough juice to OC etc.

To the OP, if your short on connections the you might have to invest in some sort of adaptor.

I had to buy some adaptors from the auction site to convert 2 6 pins in to a 6+2 pin on my 850W XFX PSU it worked fine.

I am a little confused here also, I have 2x(6+2pins) that run off the same cable. They are both plugged into my Matrix and run fine (doesn't overclock well tho). Is it bad practice to run the GPU from the same cable in this instance or can some do it and others not. Sorry I don't mean to hijack the thread its just along the same lines (no pun intended)?

got it sorted guys very happy gamer. I ran to maplins and purchased a new PSU with the proper cables. Worked straight away using 2 6-pin psu cables with 2 6+2 connectors to the graphics card. thanks for all the help

Good stuff! enjoy a brilliant card, i'd set custom fan speed and overclock the beast if I were you, that card is a monster and is designed to be overclocked!!

My GPU temps don't even go above 60C on bf3 max

Which psu did you buy? Last time I been there they only stocked cit PSU's and a 750w one exploded after running a 560ti

Thanks :) very impressed so far. Not too familiar with overclocking, bought my system from ocuk pre-overclocked, but it will definitely be something il look into. Definitely not letting this beaut go to waste.

Just a heads up, I play bf4 with this gpu currently. I have overclocked the gpu abit, my fps on everything maxed, one monitor, 1920x1080 are between 50-120.
I've yet to experience a scenario where I lagg and the fps drops ridiculously so yeah you have a bf4 ultra system with that gpu ;)
