BenQ XL2420T + Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition = 144Hz nightmare!

Ah okay thanks, for some reason I already had the latest version of afterburner but those extra settings weren't available. Downloaded it again from the link you provided above and those settings are now there :)

Will give it a bash and let you know how I get on!

You were probably using the last official version which is older than my brown and yellow poker dot y fronts.

Haha, i'll just take your word for how old your poker dot y fronts are!! ;)

I think i've set it up all correctly, but it doesn't seem to change when I load a game up?

Unless you mean the higher clocks will only kick in if I am using 3D? In which case, never as I don't use it lol

I think you can setup a key combination to press to activate the profile if it doesn't pick it up automatically. I'm in the middle of a windows reinstall myself so don't have it at hand myself to check exactly what's what. Failing that you'll just have to manually switch the profile yourself i guess.

EDIT

Just saw your edit. Try running a game and see if it switches.

Just tried running a game and the clock speeds don't seem to be changing.

Okay, honest question here.

Is the 144Hz not working correctly a known issue? Or is this the first time you've heard of it? I guess what I am asking is, if I had a nvidia card (or even a different AMD one) would I be having these issues? Would I constantly be needing to switch overclocks and get distortion and black screens (even though it is just for just a split second) when the computer loads up?

I'm in the position where I can buy another graphics card if I want, but I just don't really want to buy one if a lot of them have issues playing at 144Hz if you get me?

Not sure. Probably worth asking Thracks the AMD rep the score. Drop him a trust and you'll likely get a reply in a day or two. If he can't offer you a complete solution then it might be worth changing cards. I seem to recall him posting something about this here, but i can't find it off hand. Might be worth checking through his 50 or so posts.

Thanks pal and thanks for your help trying to sort all this out for me.

I'll see if I can find that guy and see if I can find the post you mention.

Will keep you updated :)

Good luck. From looking around seems this problem has been around for a while. Link Thracks to this thread and ask him for a working solution. If he can't provide one, switch. ;)

All done :)

Yeah I saw someone on amazon who bought exactly the same monitor using exactly the same card having problems with 144Hz as well. Wish i'd have seen that before buying the monitor! He never got it fixed so he bought a different card and didn't have any more problems. I'm really in the same position, would prefer to just buy a different card (not sure i'd trust another AMD if this issue is widespread) instead of having to go through all this!

Yeah see what he says and if he can't offer anything solid then switch. Maybe contacting him directly about the issue will at least get it fixed which will benefit others further down the line.

Hey guys, just a quick update on this. Thracks messaged me and said he can't really offer me any instant support over this issue, but he did forward everything on so they can have a look at things.

After that, I decided to do 2 more things before buying a different card.

It seems one of those 2 things has solved my issue.

1) I updated the bios on the card.

2) I deleted afterburner and now have no form of overclocking on my system.

Been running on 144Hz since yesterday and not had one crash while playing a game, no flicking, can look at any vine video I want and now and no black screens when booting window. I really have my fingers crossed this issue has gone now!

Maybe I will try to add afterburner back on my system if after another week or so everything is fine, but right now I am just delighted for now it seems to be fine!

Thanks to everyone who's offered me help with this, think we got there in the end :)

Ah thats great to hear. I wonder which of the two things actually fixed the issue? Dare you try and install afterburner again? I have to be honest i have hard time believing afterburner caused it but i guess anything is possible.

If it's alright after the next week or so I will reinstall it, but I just want to make sure everything is 100% fixed first :)

I'll keep this thread updated just incase anyone else has had/having this issue :)

How far past stock clocks were the settings on when you did?

If a tiny bump is creating artifacts then either your card is just a crap over clocker, or it needs more volts. Maybe it is even a poor card on stock volts? Maybe the new BIOS addressed that but the moment you push it it needs more.

idk, just thinking out loud, looks like it is not afterburner anyway :)

(random thought, was overdrive ticked when using afterburner? Could be CCC) :P)

I've done a little more testing since your suggestion...

I can seem to bump the "high performance GPU clock setting" up a fair amount, click apply and everything is fine.

The second I bump "high performance memory clock settings" up even by 5MHz and click apply, the whole screen goes funny (black long squares everywhere, flashing and moving when I move the mouse).

It's weird because i've been using this card on 60Hz monitor with a lot more of an overclock than 5MHz and never ever had one issue, no crashes, no artifacts etc. It seems to have been the second i've switched to a 144Hz monitor that it seems unable to overclock. Just thinking out loud myself, as I have two monitors running from the same card (one dual link to PC monitor then one hdmi to TV) does this take more power? Could my PSU be the problem? (It's a XFX Pro 650W Core Edition)

remove the other screen then and test.

Looks like we have found something sensitive with your GPU ram then?

Ditch CCC now and go back to afterburner and up the ram voltage by like 0.5 and see if it is still as sensitive?

Could you download and install GPU-Z and watch the cards voltage and speed sensors, just to get a feel of what it is doing while it is doing it.

Thanks for your help, just disabled overdrive and re-installed afterburner.

When you say up the ram voltage which one do you mean?
