Do nvidia cards still have that horrendous choke hiss?

As per the title, the last 3 nvidia cards I purchased all had terrible choke hiss when they were loaded up in games. (And yes I rmaed all 3 for replacements, and the replacements all had it aswell)

Are the newer cards any better?

Coil whine isn't something that plagues nVidia GPUs you get it randomly with all GPUs and depends on a number of factors often combinations of hardware or even your mains supply. As you had several GPUs all exhibiting it I suspect the cause of the problem was not the GPUs themselves - it would be very rare to get 6 GPUs that all had coil whine when all other factors were removed.

I've had 4 Nvidia cards and none have had any coil whine/electrical noise. Most of my AMD cards have had coil whine, though it was only severe in one case (6990).

From what I've read it seems to be the AMD cards that suffer more from coil whine than Nvidia cards. So you will have a higher chance of getting it with an AMD card.

I've experienced audible coil whine in a GTX670 and a 7850. In both cases it went away after a little bit of use so I just put it down to them settling in.

I have experienced it with both AMD and nVidia. But hae experienced it more with certain PSUs. You may find it's actually the PSU whining.

I'm getting pretty bad coil whine with my new Asus GTX780. It runs like a dream, overclocks by 200/350 on the core/mem but whines horrendously in pretty much most applications.

I had it with previous cards (GTX570 and GTX680) and it's gotten progressively worse with each, perhaps due to the increased power draw? I'm pretty sure I couldn't be as unlucky as to get 3 noisy cards so I'm guessing it's my PSU or Mobo?

most coil whine dissipates within the first 1-2 months. You have to remeber that these are brand new and it does take a while to settle in.

PSU can be a major factor to coil whine by not supplying a constant unfluctuating amperage to the card.

AMD are much more likely to suffer from electrical noise in recent times as their GPU's are generally more power hungry.

It's not the PSU, also RMA'ed that also for a completely different brand after the 4th card. Ended up going in with a microphone on the end of a pencil to locate it, and it was 100% from the cards.

I've never had any such issues with ATI cards...

Its 90% your PSU dude. I went through a long line of 7970s with coil whine which makes me think my PSU was the cause but my 2 780s are whisper quiet

Doesn't mean the PSU isn't causing it however. It's either the 6 cards or 2 PSUs you had - I'd lean towards the PSUs, what did you have before/after?

My partners machine had some weird game-specific coil whine, every time she booted Sims 3 the loading screen would cause whine like a dial-up modem, I replaced the GTX 680 with a dusty olde non-whining 8800 GT to see if continued and it sure did, replaced the PSU and the issue is gone.

It was a Corsair 800GS causing the whine, odd how it was only Sims that did it :p
