It's more obvious in game, and when you have lots of fences, trees, etc at once. Especially in the best looking games, where it stands out more if it's not enabled.
 
Instead of looking at compressed pictures maybe try it in a game?

It's not difficult to find a tree and turn AA on and off to see for yourself.

If you have Crysis 1 then use that...

Or maybe the fence is twice as close. Fences and stuff are often the bits that gain the most from higher resolutions/SSAA, so thanks for the prompt, will defo try this next time I load up bf3/4
 
IIRC it never caught on because the performance hit wasn't worth it for something that you can barely even notice in static screenshots.
 
Some people are going to be more sensitive to it than others. When there are lots of it around (Crysis 1 is a good example given how many leaves and bushes there are) it can make a very big difference.
