A terror suspect who has gone missing after changing into a burka at a mosque is being hunted by police.

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, 27, who was subject to an order restricting his movements, was last seen on Friday leaving the site in Acton, west London.

This isn't the first time a full face veil garment has been used to outwit the police, in 2006 one of the prime suspects in the brutal murder of PC Sharon Beshenivsky, escaped to Somalia in a burkha. A quick google will bring up many incidents of burkhas being used in other crimes around the world such as armed robbery.

The argument against banning full face veils has always been an ultra-liberal one that expresses discomfort at telling people what they can and can't wear. However I think we do this all the time under public decency laws, every time I go to a bank branch there's a sign telling motorcyclists to remove their helmets before they go in and as far as I'm concerned anyone walking down the street in a full face balaclava should also be told to remove it or face arrest. Is it time the law showed a bit of common sense in this regard and banned the wearing of any full face veils in public places?

I've flip-flopped a lot on this topic, they are all so socially isolated anyway that no real societal pressure can be used to make them change, and by wearing such silly outfits keeps them at the fringes anyway.

I do find the wearer's attitude in dressing like this obnoxiously separatist (oh I want to appear modest whilst surrounded by unknown men :rolleyes:). But then that appears to make them ultra appealing to muslim men?

On the other hand we have been slightly conditioned to expect the complete opposite from Western women, which isn't exactly a major victory for feminism either (show your cleavage to prove you are liberated innit)

This sort of nonsense does maintain Islam as the default pariah religion, so if they aren't bothered what people think of them then that suits me. It's pointless to try and change people, just point and snigger at them if you don't like them, laughing at such a msysoginist religion isn't a chore for most people.

If they ban Burkas, then that removes my right to wander the streets dressed as a ninja without fear of arrest.
 
Religious persecution arguments aside, is anyone else worried that all it takes to evade police terror surveillance is to walk into a building, then walk back out with a black cloth over your head?

It's ok your covered as a Burka is a sand mask or a face mask if she\he is ugly where as a Ninja uniform(shinobi shozoko) is epic :)

To be fair if they didn't/couldn't have eyes on in the building then how would you expect them to keep track when I imagine there are plenty of women in burkas coming in and out without stopping each one and alerting him to the fact he's being followed (the fact he obviously knew or suspected anyway is irrelevant).

I think it should be added to GTA, walk into a clothes store, change into a burkha and walk out.

Just like how spray painting your car makes the police lose all interest :D

Well if they knew he'd gone in and wanted to catch him, then what's to stop them from checking everyone leaving the building apart from the fear of offending people who like to wear socially divisive garments?
