Hi.

My gaming days are long behind me but I have a soft spot for Battlefield. Battlefield 2 was a big favourite of mine and I would love to try BF4 just for the hell of it.

Coincidentally I need to build myself a new PC. I have been using a C2D XP laptop for the last 4 years. So I was thinking about speccing a nice one for BF4, ideally as cheap as possible, with a 24" monitor. Gaming res would be 1080p.

On the flip side I am sort of unsure whether to wait till the game is properly patched before I make this build. Possibly wait till March till XP is discontinued? But I would be missin out on so much :o

Any way spec away please :D

Some idea of budget is needed.

For the cheapest decent performance you'd need an FX-6300 and a 7850.

The best low cost option is an FX-6300 and a 270X.

I'd recommend an FX-8320 with a 7950, both overclocked, which will give ultra performance.

All of those with 8GB memory.

True. You could also get an i5 cpu and or a 670/280x card. At 1080p this would also give ultra performance.

It's not realistic unfortunately. The closest you can get is an A10 5800K build, but this will manage low settings at best at 1080p. At 720p it might get a little bit higher.

I think about £500 excluding OS is about the minimum.

A 7950 will not give Ultra performance, I run a 4770k @ 4.6Ghz and a 7970 overclocked, it will do 60fps (usually average 90 in 32player, 60-70 in 64) in most areas, but can sometimes drop. Can't see the 7950 doing the same, and CPU makes a hell of a lot of difference in this game too.

Here's the cheapest build I think is worth it for BF4. I'm not very keen on it though. I'd want to add a CPU cooler, a better board for higher overclocking, and ideally an 8320 instead.

A 7950 at 1100MHz performs around the same as a stock 7970 GE, which will give an average of over 60fps with a good CPU, according to the benchmarks. The game's very early though, so some drops can be because of issues.

3570k @ 4.5ghz 7950 1100/1500 ultra 2xmsaa 60 - 80fps for me so far on the 64 player maps i have played, normally sat around 80fps dropping down to just above 60 when the **** hits the fan.

Get on the b-grade motherboard secion some nice deals on there, MM for the rest.

I'm specialising in such occasions, but 400 quids budget incl. 24" monitor and 64-bit OS is just impossible.
I'd give you small example: OS and monitor is 160 pounds (Ebay, used 24" Acer/LG for 90), case, RAM, HDD, PSU, DVD and mobo is about 120 pounds = simple equation = 120 quids left for CPU and graphic card = most crucial things in BF4.

And 120 quids is something, my friend, that most people would laugh at in terms of graphic card (alone) for BF4 & FullHD.

You might try to buy an old Dell/HP/Medion whatsoever... desktop with Vista COA, equipped with RAM and some 1156/1155/1150 stuff and upgrade it (graphic card & CPU & PSU) and buy a monitor, but I don't think it's comfortable (CPU need change and overclocking, if you buy 1156, for example). Raise your budget, or minimize requirements. Or buy PS ;-)

He doesn't need a monitor and he hasn't stated whether he needs an OS or not

Thanks everyone.

Looks like my budget is a bit on the low side.

I will need an OS as well so that will as to the cost. Looks like £500 is the bare minimum then for something half decent.

I'm gonna scan MM over the coming weeks to see what turns up.

Cheers.
