Hi guys,

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones, my dad tried them on and instantly asked me to find him a pair that are usable with an iPhone as he found them really comfy. Would it be worth getting a portable headphone amplifier and getting a pair of DT770's or is there an alternative that doesn't need amplification?

Regards,

There is a 32 Ohm version which was made for use with portable devices. They are not that common though, compared to the 80 and 250 Ohm versions. They are also a bit more expensive. Thomann has them for £150. The 80 version may be loud enough from portable devices, or if not, he could add a amp. That adds more bulk and wires, so the 32 may be the better option. Plus the 32 has a shorter cable. Depends how mobile he is going to be. I certainly wouldn't want to be moving around carrying a long coiled up headphone cable.

I got the 80Ω and using it with my old Blackberry mobile and it works pretty well even without the audio boost.

I'll look into the 32Ω edition thanks. He mainly just sits around the house with it so I don't think it needs to be too portable so a portable amplifier is an option. I let him try my 80Ω with his iPhone and he said they were very quiet.

Takstar HI 2050

Takstar make some great headphones for the cost

I'd also look at the sennheiser momentum on ears

Holy cow they are cheap, thanks for the suggestions. After speaking to my dad he isn't keen on the portable amplifier idea so strictly low powered headphones it is. He just really liked the shape/comfort of the DT770 Pro so needs to be extremely similar.

That's a seller, not Amazon themselves. Looks to me as though the headphone price was reduced and the difference added to the P+P, to make the price look more appealing to those who don't pay attention to postage costs. A few sellers do this on ebay. It's a dumb idea really. Sellers on ebay and the US Amazon site have them at about £40, so it's not that you are paying a lot more by buying them from the seller on Amazon. Can't find them anywhere else .

Fair enough that makes sense.
