Right mrs car (omega) died due high mot cost so;

Parents help by looking for another cheap car (i work 70+ hrs week), they see an astra (53plate 2.0 dti), dealer (small) takes them for drive as only insurance for him, test drive is in town. Father sees no issues so calls me. Astra is an astra so I say if good buy.

Dealer drops off car at parents (Sat PM), they pay receipt says "sold as seen" :(

I insure (Sunday) and tax (Monday) it. Mrs drives it home this afternoon thinks nothing of it as she dwardles around anyway.

I get home 9pm go to mve car on drive and well yeah take spin to just see what its like; 2500rpm max rev 72mph max speed

Am i screwed with whats written on receipt?

PS Mrs used it twice and seemed more powerful the second time but **** knows!

Whats written on the receipt is:

a) A waste of ink and legally invalid
b) An indication of just how much of a pain this is going to be to deal with, sadly.

A dealer cannot sell a car to a private individual 'sold as seen'.

Is this the same for when a dealer states it's a trade sale only or sold on trade terms.

I've seen more n more dealers on AT doing this, selling a car through their own AT site but stating it's not through the company books and a Trade Sale and no warranty applied.

You can't sell on 'trade terms' to members of the public. There is no 'opt out' of the Sale of Goods Act - even if the customer signs a waiver.

Yes, they are selling crap bangers to clueless people and taking advantage of them. Yet another shady practice from everyones favourite trustworthy industry :(

I thought this was the case, they obviously hope or think they will just sell it to any old joe public who will be none the wiser. If someone does come along and state the actual regs to them they will just say I won't sell it to you lol.

What would be the point in that? I actually was pointing to "an astra is an astra" which to me assumes that because its a popular car, it should be ok and reliable. However, from what the OP said about testing it when he could, it was clear his father didn't test drive it, or at least not enough, otherwise he'd of found the same issue..

Yes my father should have but didn't have insurance, I also meant it as in I already have an astra so dont need to test to see how drives as I know how they handle etc, and I only took for spin as haven't had a diesel apart from vans before.

Yes I should have been more defensive and thinking dealers are evil etc but that doesn't help now!

Edit : After laptop plugging in only two error codes; so it either the erg valve or a vacuum pipe split which isnt too bad if garage is a complete ****

It's probably worth stating though that "dealers" can do this through eBay so long as they are listed as an auction.

Guessing it the 2.0 dti lump? It will be the vacuum lines rubbed through, one leak makes the entire egr/turbo/throttle flap system fall over. Grab a set from a scrappy or pick up some shiney silicone pipe from ebay and it will be an instant fix.

Edit, laptop plugin? Using an opcom or generic reader?

Well went in ready for an argument and didn't have one.

Took in this morning and he called me about half 4 saying its all sorted so will see when I pick up in morning!

Hopefully a happy ending.

And yes in the future I will test drive an car I buy I learnt my lesson

I had this with what I thought was a dodgy garage, had a crap clutch which I only noticed when I got home. Rang them the next day and they fitted it for collection the day after. Always easy to expect the worse, but it doesn't always end that way.
