7870 or R7 280X

Both of these are available for about £150 which is my budget for a new GPU...

However is it worth going for the newer card and hoping to get something from Mantle, or do I go for the 7870 which will do me absolutely fine (or hope that the 7950 comes crashing down in price)?

Any advice peeps?

Running a Phenom 2 BE 965 @ 4.0GHz with 8GB RAM if that helps.

It's the same card, the 280X has a slightly higher reference clock. Both support Mantle.

Edit: that's the 270X, not the 280X. There's no R7 280X.

I've looked at the 7950 but have heard there could be issues with CPU bottlenecks on that with the Phenom 2. Would the overclock I have negate this?

You'd be fine with a 7950.

Wait what? The 280X is the same card as the 7970 not the 7870. If you can get a 280X for £150 I'd jump on that...

Edit: Oh aye, as others have pointed out there is no R7 280X! Makes the question a bit tougher

Oops. Yes, 270X is the same as the 7870. 280X is 7970.
