BMW and M Power Owners

Fair enough..

528i, noticed a bit of an oil leak on the top of the engine, cam cover, not a big issue, however in traffic today I was getting huge amounts of oil fumes through the vents to the point you could clearly see it...
Advertised with tax till end of April, its end of Jan.
ABS/TC light came on on friday, then went off, then came back on again, the intermittent wiper only has one speed, both of the above apparently mean a dodgy ABS/TC ECU.
I'm not expecting anything awesome for a £1000 car but given the guy said he used to work at Sytner it suggests to me that things might have been botched to get the lights out and get it off the forecourt...

Have you been in touch with the trader you bought it from? You never know he maybe ok about it and take it back, guess you wont know until you ask.

With regards to the tax situation surely you noticed that when you bought it? I had a similar issue with mine advertised with 76k it was closer to 78 :(

I'm sure someone else will be along and post some advice soon, there are quite a few BMW forums but I've found it hard to get a response on them when I've asked questions.

We've got an old relative in the hospital at the mo so no, we havent gone to the trader yet, I was just looking for some general knowledge sort of things in case he tries to fob us off.
The missus found the car so the tax didnt come up at the time as I checked it had some rather than comparing it with the advert.

The oil smell through vent thing is just a leaky gasket. Simple and inexpensive to fix. You cant really bodge the ASC lights either so I doubt he did that, could be as simple as a wheel speed sensor.

Oil smell I get, my other car's a cav turbo lol

It was literally coming in to the point I had to open all the windows and kill the fans, what it was like under the bonnet I have no idea but you could see it coming in through the vents like the breather itself was pointed at them, there's even residue on the vents, thats how much was coming in..

The ABS/TC thing only started on friday night after the bucket load of rain we had so its possible that its just a dodgy wire or water getting somewhere it shouldnt..

The keys on my e39 have stopped working the central locking remotely and the button in the center console has also stopped working. Any ideas what this could be as the central locking does work if I put the key in the door.

I have found a couple of guides online for reinitialising the keys but these don't seem to work. I think it is something else anyway because the button isn't working.

Went to start the car this evening and it was struggling to turn over, now it's just failing completely at turning over. Tried jump-starting it with no luck (not very meaty cables though) so have left it be until tomorrow.

Any quick thoughts? Is an E46 330Ci.

As above, check the battery charge as a first off. If it jumps/bumps next thing I'd be investigating is the alternator, check what charge the battery is getting when the engine is running.

Or it could be as simple as something has been left on in the car and drained it

More than likely a duff battery showing signs of failing now it's getting cold matey. Problem with the M54 is if you've cranked it too much then it'll be flooded and you'll need to whip the plugs out to let the excess fuel evaporate off.

Had this exact problem the night I bought mine and no amount of jumping, even from the breakdown man's van, would get it going. The specialist I got it recovered too said they see it all the time with M54s and plugs out is the only way to get them going again.

I, like you, would guess battery. Just as it gets cold is a classic time for a weak battery to die. You have a voltmeter you could put across the battery?

When you say "struggling to turn over" can you describe this more? When my battery died on my e46 it just kept loudly clicking and the lights kept coming on and turning off as i was trying to fire it up.

Woah quick responses, thanks all :)

rodenal - Everything was off when I went to it and when I walked passed it this morning, so could just be the cold?

What is the instrument cluster telling you the battery voltage is?

It's not :/ put it in test mode and scrolled to Test 9, it then just went straight to displaying the trip mileage again....

Thanks for the info mate, I'm at work tomorrow but Dad will be tending to it so will let him know about the plugs, although we were trying to not crank it too much.

Not got one handy. Sounds pretty much the same symptoms as you describe though. New batteries are much cheaper than expected though, so if it turns out to only be that then there's a relief!

If it switches back to normal mileage display then you're doing it wrong surely :p

e: Anyway, I replaced my battery recently (similar symptoms, cluster showed 6.7v), the original battery lead a good life for 10 years. Bought a Bosch one from Halfords and realised the height was lower than the original so the brace that clamps and screws over when inserted into the boot recess didn't fit as there was an inch gap. Had to place a plank of wood under the battery in the recess for it to sit on allowing the brace to screw over tightly. Just a heads up incase you do replace your battery. Also remember to plug in the air pipe tube thing!

Oh it is 100% user error :p was getting cold sat out there and don't need it until Thursday so have called it a day for now.

Ty for the heads up about size! You mention 10 years out of the original battery, makes me think mine could also be original, although didn't see any BMW roundels on it.

Mine was white and had an embossed BMW logo on it, I can't remember if it had a BMW logo on the sticker too but it was labelled up all in German that's what I do remember.

The radio / nav keeps tripping o0ut on my E60 now, I hear a tiny pop then the whole lot turns off and reboots, every 15 minutes at the moment, I've looked at my BMW comprehensive warranty information and can't see that the radio / nav isn't covered, I remember something but that might of been the warranty direct warranty I had on my S80.

New battery hasn't fixed the issue :( The only other issue with the car is the Oil Level Sensor has gone kaput, could that have caused something else like a fuse to go?

It will be covered as long as it's not being caused by water ingress or something.
