Road Cycling Essentials

Tomorrow will be my first commute on the bike to work in nearly 6 weeks. I've not even touched a bike in a month! Hopefully it'll be quiet on the roads at the time I leave tomorrow, though the thought of riding home is rather daunting... hopefully it'll mark my return to the world of cycling :)

On another note, I'm glad this is out of my reach, in terms of both size and finances; Bradley Wiggins 2012 Pinarello Dogma 2. It'll probably be of interest to [DOD]Asprilla, however ;)

Nah. It's too big.

Might be old news, but have just noticed that Strava have introduced the new route planner feature. Pretty handy as a free tool for working out distances and planning rides.

I'm tempted to try a little loop round me on my ancient mtb and see how my time compares to what I can do on my road bike...

It's mostly the same physics on both bikes. Only difference (beyond physcological) is the slight difference in rolling resistance and aerodynamics, with possibly some wasted energy if the mtb has full suspension or no lockout.

So yeah, about 1-2mph

Weight really makes very little difference.

The thing I find makes the most difference is how much quicker to gain speed a road bike is, and how much easier it is to hold the speed.

The massively compromised riding position and huge knobbly tyres kill your speed on a MTB.

I'd expect a road bike to be 30-50% quicker for the same power output.

I don't understand where "1-2mph" is coming from. But it's going to vary wildly depending on rider/ability and terrain it certainly isn't a linear increase between the two. I ride hilly routes and I can tell you the difference will be far greater than 1-2mph.

You go girl :) Hows Hydraulic brakes working out?

Not tried them yet.

Replacement bleed port plug arrived yesterday so I fitted it last night, put 28mm 4Seasons on and taped the bars.

Started a new contract yesterday so didn't have access to the bike park this morning. SSCX will get its first run out tomorrow morning, 52 mile round trip commute.

Some guys I know are having a CX outing on Saturday but it's my eldest's fourth birthday party so no pass for me.
