first of all I don't often venture into the filthy console underworld other than the gtav multiplayer thread so be nice or I'll run back to the master pc gaming race section :)

looking to pick up either a ps4 XB1 for my lads Christmas but I have no idea which is going to be the better option.

he currently has a 360 and a ps3 which both get equal amounts of use. game wise hes currently into batman Origins in a big way along with some heavily supervised gta5 anything marvel related and WWE.

in regards to launch day lineups anything that might be worth picking up and can we possibly have some (non fanboy) comments on which console to pick up? We already have a Wii U and apart from injustice getting fired up regularly it just gathers dust

cheers folks

Difficult to say really. General consensus is that Xbox One has the better launch lineup but PS4 is slightly more powerful.

What exclusive titles from last gen did he like? (Halo, Uncharted etc)

never really took to any of the exclusives from last gen. is there any benefits one over the other? ie features spec etc.

what about online play is xb1 going to be subbed again like the 360 and is the ps4 staying f2p online? any major variances in the hardware? I know their both amd gpu/cpu combos but is there anything obvious that makes one a better option than the other?

gaming will be at 1080p btw

This is my take on it...

Xbox One

Better launch line up
Better controller (historically, I haven't had hands on time with either new controller yet)
XBL is a better service than PSN
Has better media features

PS4

More powerful hardware, at a cheaper price
More games available at launch (though a lot are Indie games which may/may not appeal)
PS+ gives far better free games than XBL Games with Gold
Online gaming no longer free (except for a few free to play games)

That's all my own opinion of course.

Features wise PS4 is slightly more powerful, Xbox One comes with the new version of Kinnect. Both require online subs for online play (PS4 lets you play some free games online without it) PS4 you get free games each month with it (at the moment just Indie games but that will probably change) MS haven't announced their plans yet.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't some of the features on the xb1 not availlable in the UK?
Like the TV and other stuff?
We have both 350 and ps3 and the ps3 is only ever used for blurays now. Thinks my lad prefers the xbl over psn. He's 15 btw. How old is your lad?

my lads 9.

this is going to be a tough call. I can see it going to a coin toss, very little between them whats the exclusives like?

Forza, Dead Rising and KI on XB1

Killzone & Knack on PS4 (although there are several free to play games as well)

Might be worth trying to find out which one he actually wants the most.

9?!

Hell....get him both. He already has everything else.....at the age of 9.
Does he ever leave the house?

Lol, sorry. My cynicism aside, does he play games that are above his age group, like COD, GTA etc? If so, don't the new consoles have tighter security which may disallow his account (with d.o.b. linked) from accessing such games? Or do you have that covered?

There's a lot more child friendly games on the ps4 at launch.

Plus if you like multi platform games your best bet would be the ps4.

Also a saving of £80 is not to be scoffed at.

If he's 9 then I'd probably advise towards the PS4. The best launch title on the XB1 IMO is Dead Rising, which of course he shouldn't be playing at 9 years old. As mentioned, the PS4 has a lot more indie games which will be more child friendly.

that's a fair point £80 is 2 new titles at the end of the day,

and i'd imagine console +4 games is more fun that console +2
