Any ideas what's the cheapest way to get an unlimited data sim?

3 seem the cheapest bet, but why do they charge more for a tablet sim than a iPhone sim? Can't I just use an all-you-can-eat sim or will they block it?

I have a EE 4G one for mine at the moment as they had a special offer on at the weekend. It's 3GB data for £11 a month on a 30 day rolling contract.

How is a SIM with a 3Gb limit 'unlimited'

The reaosn price increase, is becuase youu are far more likley to use shed loads of data on tablet than a phone.

However what i do is. Have a phone with unlimited tethering (im on an old virgin plan, but threes one plan is the best for this) and tether. I then have a sim from a different network in the ipad payg if phone doesnt have 3g or i dont want to tether for some reason. Not the most convienent way, but the cheapest.

Three is rolling out 4g in decmber and is not charging any more for it.
It is by far your best bet.

Its not, just saying for reference. Three are going to be the only ones doing a 'unlimited' sim at the moment.

I pretty much do this but the other way around (well other than the PAYG sim) :)

I currently have a 3 sim for my iPhone, but don't have tethering (and they blocked my tethering as I was using it anyway):p

Could upgrade my phone sim to allow tethering but the battery life is bad as it is and it's a bit of hassle having to turn on tethering all the time etc.

I wouldn't mind paying the £12.90 p/m that 3 charge for an unlimited iphone sim, but their "ipad" sim is £15 and that's only 10GB of data. Doorknobs.

Here do you use data a lot?
Cant you just plug phone in.
I usually use most of it in a van or on the train and just plug it in.

I know that feeling very well, I know its such a small thing but it annoys the hell out of me.

How much data do you go through a month on the iPad?

You answered your own question in a way. The only network contemplating unlimited 4G data is Three and they haven't launched yet. As others have said, do you really need unlimited?

Okay, but I don't see why I should have to pay more for an "iPad" sim than an "iPhone" sim with 3, for less data allowance...

Becuase its like insurance, they know on average people on phones will use x mb a month, on a tablet that average will be significantly higher.

So allthough its unlimited they are betting most people will not use it like its unlimited.
Basically people are subsidising us heavy users.

Here's what i did:

Got a normal three contract sim for use with phones, the one plan, and inserted it into my tablet. Job done. Get one with low mins and all you can eat data and then get it cut to the size you need.

Though it's not currently 4g.

Technically yes, as the IMEI number is transmitted when you connect to their network and they can check what device that belongs to. Whether they bother to or not is something else though.

They will block your SIM. It may not be for a few days or a few weeks (or it could be tomorrow) but it will happen.

I've done the same thing more than once and it's been blocked eventually until I out it back in a phone.

There is NO UNLIMITED DATA SIM FOR TABLETS EITHER 3G or 4G.

You can get 10GB rolling on 3 for £15 on an iPad data sim but that is the best you will get.

I can't comment for all networks but I've got away with it for almost year on T-Mobile. Got one of the £10 iPhone 4 SIMs that came with free data for a year (capped at 500Mb a month but enough for me). Per the terms this didn't work for tablets and you had to give an IMEI for an iPhone 4 to activate it. I still had my 4 at the time, so did this then immediately put it in my iPad3 and its worked for the past 11 months, it will expire later this month so I should make it to the end without being detected.
