R290X shortest reign ever

Looks about ~10% faster than the R9 290X, not bad, well done

$700 would be £530, £100 more than the R9 290X, for Nvidia thats not bad at all, assuming £530 will be the price.

I will say tho, i think with a bit more work the 290X could match it, 7 or 8% is not a huge amount to catch up and the 290X suffers from inadequate cooling causing it to throttle.

I'm a fan of no camp but hardocp seems to be batting for the AMD camp recently, the majority of reviews show the 780ti faster than the 290x by 10% and more. Still I don't think it's worth any than £500, but we know how Nvidia like to price gouge, 780 is a good example.

The 290 and R290X would have reviewed much better if they'd designed a better cooler.

Yes, or allowed non ref designs to hit the market from the get go.

AFAIK,AMD said it was a price thing,and is why the cheapest R9 290 cards are £310,and R9 290X cards dipped to as low as £390 at one point.

Some of the pre-overclocked GTX780 cards probably are within spitting distance of a reference GTX780TI anyway,especially with the GTX780 GHZ Edition SKU.

Hence,non-reference R9 290 and R9 290X cards are also going to be mighty interesting. Of course it will be interesting to see how much non-reference GTX780TI cards cost too.

TBH,we have not seen this much battling of high end cards for a long time.

I think if I was on air, I'd begrudgingly stump up for the 780ti.

It gets more complicated if you are looking to go water though, as the 290x is clearly held back by its God awful cooler, and you can buy the 290x+block for less than a 780ti.

10% faster than 290X for 20% extra cost, I guess that is the way of the highest end GPUs!

Great review and good honest reading Webbo. In the days to the Titan Ultra being called (now the 780Ti with 3GB), I said a couple of times that the full fat core would not be able to reach big clocks because of heat/voltage/TDP but man was I wrong

I have added loads of benches to the OP now Peeps and looks like Sleeping Dogs Super Sampling still brings Nvidia to its knees

Or save a chunk of money and go for a custom cooled 780 or 290 (when the latter is launched with custom coolers). Roughly 780TI in game performance (at least in terms of feel - raw framerate would be in the Ti's favour) and ~£150-200 in your back pocket.

If they did it to keep the price down i can accept that, but then again the 7990 is going for the same money as the 290X and that will be more expensive to make.

They should have made a 3 fan revision cooler like it for the 290 series and allowed it to clock as high as it would until it reached 95c with that cooler, this is how Nvidia's GPU Boost 2 works.

It would have been much faster than it already is, you know what? if the thing costs ~ £20 more with that cooler on it, so be it. it would be an awesome GPU.

Bring on the non-reference R9 290 and R9 290X's, whats taking so long?
