Main Dealer Woes - Read for a laugh...

Could have bought a locking key removal set for less!

Dealers for locking wheel nut removal?? You mad Bro!

Please. Read my replies before making silly comments. I have already stated that using a cheap DIY kit would not have worked due to the size of the bolts and causing damage to my alloys.

Hence why I don't use locking nuts, too much hassle before and if someone wants to steal my wheels I'm pretty sure a locking nut is not going to stop them.

This is the way I always see it, how often are wheels really likely to be stolen anyway? Then added to that if they want them then they will get them regardless, I had one removed without the key before due to the key breaking, the guy at the type place had it off within a couple of minutes.

It makes you wonder. I now have a decent cold forged steel set made by TPI which are a little easier to remove for a thief I would guess but if anything where to happen, my insurance would cover it!

Well I would have expected it to have been discounted as they couldn't remove all four, plus I didn't round off the nuts, it was the locking key that rounded off after 4 uses. The key isn't even forged steel so how they can expect it to last is beyond me...

I've lost count how many time mine's been used and it's absolutely fine?

The standard Ford locking nuts are very poor. They tarnish very quickly and either the key or nuts themselves are easily chewed. I replaced my set with a set of shiny McGuard ones before the inevitable occurred :)

Finally, you mentioned you copper grease the bolts - you shouldn't as it effects the torque and the manufacturer quoted figures are (generally) free of grease :)

I wouldn't hold your breath with the McGuard ones.....my McGuard key also broke! Now they were a right PITA to remove with their spinning collars :(

Took my MK2 Focus ST to them yesterday to remove the locking nuts which I couldn't do due to their crappy key rounding off.

Only persons fault is yours here - you rounded the key off by not using it correctly.

....they proceeded to charge me £37 for removing 3 bolts.

....

Eventually took the car to an independent place round the corner who removed it in 5 minutes for a tenner.

So dealer removes 3 nuts at £12/nut and the other place charges £10/nut. Hardly much diff.

I suppose I am looking for your views as to whether I complain and try to get the £37 back, after all, they didn't fulfil their end of the bargain? These bolts where put on by myself with a hand wrench lubricated by copper grease just so you are aware!

Complain? The problem started when you rounded the locking wheel key off.

The difference wouldn't have been enough to justify it tbh

Then again, he did just break the locking wheel nut key.

Maybe not to someone who goes equipped, however you are making it dead easy for the casual thief...

I've managed to get into a vauxhall set with a set of long nose pliers before, so I reckon even the casual theif will get into them if they want them.

But then I can't imagine the casual theif walking about with a jack. Anyone wanting to steal my wheels is going out their way to do so.

Plus it's a pain in the *** when they do end up rounded, which happens all too often with cheap OEM sets.

Exactly, the locking nuts are not going to stop someone who has gone to the trouble to go out of their way to target your wheels and bring tools to remove them. I need to remove the set off my Rangie before they cause hassle as they have done with my Mercs.

Your mistake is you took your car to a main dealer for something so minor. I would just put it down as a life lesson.

Also why have you got a picture of someone else's car in your sig, if you own a Ford.
