Monsoon fittings leaking

Hi all,

I just started building my new pc and had a bit of bad luck and got my case smashed in transit (Parvum have been amazing helping out fixing new case). Even though the case was smashed I got it taped together so I could measure tubing and so on and I got my loop measured out the way I wanted it and then I sent on the case for RMA the next day.

So while I was waiting for my case I wanted to leak test the loop.

This is what I have in the loop:
  • EK-DDC 3.2 PWM X-RES 100
  • Monsoon 19/13mm (ID 1/2 OD 3/4) Fittings
  • EK-Supreme LTX CSQ Intel CPU Waterblock
  • Primochill Primoflex Advanced Tubing 19/13 - UV Blue
  • Mayhems X1 UV Blue Premixed Watercooling Fluid
  • Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 - XFlow

It seems as if the fittings are not sealing correct against the pump and the rad. I have checked to make sure the o-rings are in place and they are. But its like the area that is designed for the o-ring is to large and is not sealing against the pump. With the rad its like the threads on the fittings are to long and bottom out before the rad hits the o-ring if that makes any sense at all.

Would it help if I used Teflon Tape (plumbing tape) around the threads before screwing them in place? I love the look of these fittings but I feel like I am having no luck at all at the moment.

  1. Broken case
  2. No power cord with PSU
  3. Monsoon fittings leaking
  4. Cut my finger on the box for the PSU (blood everywhere)
  5. Forgot to order thermal paste (im an idiot sometimes)
  6. And some more things to tired to explain hehe

Anyways if anybody has some ideas here on how I can fix this and not have to buy new different fittings I would be very very happy.

I will take some pictures and post them so its easier to what I mean.

Nope no paste with the EK block, should there be?

I'll get some PTFE tape tomorrow and try it out.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Going down during my lunch break today to get some PTFE tape and hoping that will help.

I think I have sorted out the leak around the rad, now its only the pump left. The O-ring that was on the fitting on the rad was busted.

Here are some pictures that should explain what I mean.

Silly question, but have you tried another o ring as the one on the pump could be faulty or too thin. Must admit I have been using these fittings for quite some time and have not had this issue - thus far at least. If the fitting is not closing up on the O ring - try fitting a thicker one - you can get them from Halfords or DIY store.

Not a silly question at all, trouble shooting tips are always good!

But yeah I have tried different ones but only the same size ones that came with the fittings. Will run into halfords today during my lunch and have a quick look.

Those EK tube pump/res usually come with a small 10mm extender in the box. The inlet is recessed into the pump top (a bit of a weird design) but without the extender, the o-ring seal isn't made hence why you're getting a leak there.

The silver extender is a bit sh** especially when you have all that purple bling there!

Edit: If you read this before your lunch break, try to remember if you saw that extender in the box! It should definitely be there.

Hi daveip,

Nope no extender in the box. I just checked, had the box in my bag because a m8 at work wanted to have a look.

So smashed case in transit, no thermal paste with the water block, power cord missing with PSU and no extenders for the pump. I am not sure I should try and delid my CPU with all this bad luck I am having.

I had a similar leak yesterday. My fitting wasn't screwing down enough to let the O-ring compress, probably due to a slightly off thread on the fitting. Luckily the reservoir i was screwing it onto was plastic, so if i tried hard enough with pliers, i could get the fitting to cut itself through the thread of the reservoir. Had to replace the O-ring with a thicker one though, to help seal it.

@daveip: I got all my stuff from here (OcUK), I will give them a call and see what the deal is. OcUK have always been helpful so I am guessing there will be no issues. Thanks for those pictures, I have everything in my bad except for the extender (typical hehe).

@Avenged7Fold: Pliers? That sounds scary hehe. But it worked out in the end?

Been running for about 2 hours now without any leaks, I think that the PTFE tape is doing its job good at the moment.

Took one more look through everything I have, boxes, bags even the bin but no extension for the pump. Ahh well thats life I guess.

Good to know u got it working very blingy btw
Heres hoping I dont have any problems rebuilding my over the weekend

That fitting is a 10mm extender. XSPC have ones i have used before on OCuk, though in principle i dont really see how it will help since the connection is the same as a standard fitting. Maybe it has a bigger O-ring?
