New laptop HDD needed asap

When my mates laptop starts up, the HDD makes a strange consistent sound and then a message appears saying 'Operating system not found'. I assume the HDD is no longer working?

It's a Sata laptop, would this HDD work fine? Would any 2.5inch sata HDD work fine?

I am pretty sure that SATA laptop drives are interchangeable, but perhaps the height is important.....some are 9.5mm and some are less.....the internal space may be best suited to a certain size.
Perhaps whip out the current HDD and look up the specs?

The HDD does have a sort of mouting plate on it so I just assume that'll screw off and screw on to the new HDD.

2.5" x 9.5mm is the standard size for a laptop.
Ultra thin laptops use 7mm.
