Looking for the best single card for 1080p gaming.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, OP. Hope you don't mind me poking my nose in here? I need to get a new card within the next week or so, it's been driving me crazy for the last month or so; every time I think I've found the right card something else comes along!

This will be my first build and I want it to last. I'm buying a 24" 144Hz monitor (no room for 27" otherwise I'd look at 1440p) and would like to play at max IQ at 1080p with framerates that take advantage of the monitor. CPU would either be a 4670K or 4770K, depending on how much I sink into the graphics card.

So far the 7990 seems hard to beat. Cheaper than the good 780s and, on paper mega-fast. But can I ask you guys who own them what the frame times etc are like? Seen a few vids on Youtube, but couldn't really get much info out of them. And if I was to upgrade again, would adding a 280X/7970 give me grief or could it actually help?

On the other hand, the 780 Classified and HOF editions look nice, and I'm happy with the price.

290 is another option, but it sounds like the fan might wake the kids at night if I set it to run fast enough to prevent throttling.

I understand the sensible thing to do is wait, but I really feel like I need to get something sooner rather than later.

Mantle is interesting to me, but so is Shadow Play. So tough to decide! Any ideas fellas?

Mantle is 4 days away so I could wait.
(might drop the Nvidia prices more if is as good as rumoured...)

If you want to go quiet, then you do not go for overclocking, at least on your own, get a factory over clocked.

GTX780 MSI twin frz and EVGA ACX are pretty good and quiet I believe and you can grab them now.

7990 - I just got one and am blown away by it. I'm running 1440p and I very rarely drop below 55 FPS and I have scalling set to 140% - i have a 2500k clocked to 4.8 and that's the bottleneck.

I do have a 1200w PSU (obviously overkill!) and I'm not sure I would want to use anything less than 800w if you are planning to overclock the CPU and/or GPU.

Single card, easy HD 7990 :)

Indeed. It's not too expensive anymore either.

Could not agree more, the 7990 will blow the 780 out of the water and then some.

It's on offer this week and is an absolute steal not to mention the free games you get with it.

I have one and it is just phenominal, I get huge FPS on pretty much all titles it was a great upgrade from my 7970.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus HD 7990 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £439.99
Total : £439.99 (includes shipping : FREE).

:confused::confused::confused:

What's up with the red team storming my thread lol, where are my green boys at?! :D

Not really storming mate, merely saying that the best single card is the 7990 which is a fact.

The 780 is about the same price and the 7990 is about 1.5x better.

I don't mind which brand i own and never have i just go for the best card at the time of buying.

I agree that the 7990 is the fastest card, and it is also quite cheap. Maybe my title is misleading though, let's just say I want the 2nd best card ;)

I was not referring to you, if you read the whole thread you will probably notice that I only get AMD recommendations which is quite surprising lol.

I don't mind which brand I get either, I'm fine with both, but right now, I don't want a 7990/290X/290 for various reasons which I am not going to discuss as I don't want to start a flame war.

It comes down to the 780 Classified vs the 780ti. Once again, I don't care about benchmark scores, only gaming performance at 1080p/60Hz.

Sounds to me like you've already made your mind up? :p

Get the 780ti and be done with it, should last you a good while @ 1080p.

I'd be very cautious in buying a 7990 with your current PSU anyway.

I have to say - this was a painful read.

Your thread asks for the fastest single card solution there is ... got the answer and completely disregarded it. I don't understand what the point of this thread was as it seems as if you had made your mind up a while back.

Sorry for hurting your feelings, maybe I should write you a check to soften your pain?

Why is it so hard to understand that I don't want a 7990?

I opted for the r9 290x.

I know it's overkill at the moment, however I do think in the next 12-24 months, games will start using higher resolution textures thanks to the next generation consoles.

Yes we know the consoles are well below the power of a current high-end PC, but most games at the moment are still utilising assets from the Xbox 360 and PS3 era.

Not wanting a 7990 is hardly unreasonable - I would always prefer a single core GPU over a twin. Plus there are heat/noise considerations with the 7990.

Don't want to sound like I'm speaking on behalf of the guy who posted that but people are chiming in with their suggestions and spending time to help you.

If a certain card/brand is not acceptable to you then of course that's totally understandable but you should be more prescriptive with your requirements that way your thread wouldn't get clogged up and you avoid wasting other peoples time.

Hope you enjoy your new card, whatever it is. It's certain to be a great upgrade regardless of your final decision. :)

So why didn't u just start a thread asking which 780 is best!?
As u have dis regarded any amd choice available which is amusing as u state your happy to own any brand aslong as it's not amd hmmmm.....
U shouldn't be having a go at people taking there time out to help you answer a question u asked which they have given u the correct answer too which u clearly don't like because u don't want amd products!

Basically what you are asking is which 780 should I buy, this should have been your thread title quite obviously.

And seriously why this reply it's pathetic and childish,If you actually worded your thread correctly in the first place u wouldn't of wasted people's time trying to help u,not that u deserve it with that kind of reply to a post which describe this thread perfectly.

Enjoy whichever 780 u decide to buy they will be plenty powerful for your needs.
