I bought an NH-D14 and it reeks of smoke

doyll -

In your post above with the links to dying the fans I couldn't find any mention of how to submerge them in water without destroying the electronic bits? I'm probably being blind/thick but i've gone through several pages of that thread.

Thanks

As for the auction listing was never expecting anyone to mention their heat sink smells of smoke but given just how bad it is (the fans particularly smell utterly gross) I would count as a significant defect. The absence of thermal paste I also think is pretty bad given its importance and the fact he apparently managed to use all of it in one application.

Because he was using dye I suggested stuffing something into the gap between fan and housing (first post in link) to keep the dye particles out of motor.

Getting wet does not damage electronics. Powering up while it is not good and dry is when damage would occur. That's why I said make sure they are dry before using them.

As others have mentioned, getting electronics wet isn't really a problem as long as its dried very well before being used. Just submerge the whole thing, clean and then if you want to be paranoid give it a final rinse in dionised water then dry on radiator turning several times.

On the thermal paste front, to be honest mate I think you're being a little precious, I wouldn't expect the thermal paste to come with a second hand HSF. But then, I guess most of us have a few tubes hanging around our houses we could use instead.

I'm with you on the smell though, nothing worse than stale cigarette smoke....

Thanks chaps.

The un-named auction site is giving me money back so it looks like I have a noctua for free :)

I'll give cleaning the fans a go and if i bork them i'll buy some thermalright ones.

If drying them on the radiator is ok then i assume using a hair dryer will also be alright?

deionised water or battery top up water can be had from halfords if you cant get any for free, about £4 a gallon iirc

Thanks chaps.

Although the seller didn't describe the item 100%, it was still fully working so that seems mighty unfair you get to keep the item AND your money.

What if he sold this item to fund presents for his kids for Christmas, or to raise some funds to pay off something important? I would either have asked for a partial refund or sent it back personally.

I think you are being unreasonable. Seller did not intentionally mislead you. You made assumptions that product was new (it may be), that it came with TIM (he said he applied TIM) and that it had no odour (he neglected to say he smoked). You could easily have asked instead of assuming. The fact it smells of smoke could simply be a result of being out of box in room with smokers. I hate the odour of stale cigarette smoke too. But you are at fault here at least as much if not more than seller is.. reporting them and taking money back without returning the cooler is way over the top! And that auction site is not being fair either!

Deduct a fiver.. maybe even a tenner.. but not all forty quid! Please do not try buying anything I might sell!

Hair dryer will dry the surface but not inside of the motor housing/cover.

As said several time set them in a warm place for a day or so and turn a few times to be sure they are dry inside.

You do realise he doesn't lose any money, right? The refund is from the site, not the seller. And given the state of the packaging and the rancid smell of the 'practically new' cooler and his appalling attitude after I contacted him about It would have served him to lose out.

If it's eBay you do realise they go after the seller to recoup the funds?

I once bought a case on here or some other forum and they were a smoker. It was absolutely disgusting. I had to pressure wash the whole thing and throw away some of the fans. The case must have been intaking and exhausting smoke for years. Poor thing. :) Smokers generally can't smell that their stuff smells.

Seller does loose the money. And you are supposed to return the product to seller. It's all in black & white on their site. The site refunds to you and takes it from him. You are in effect having the site steal the money from him while you keep the product.

I agree with the general sentiment. If you're keeping the product after obtaining a refund then you're nothing more than a common thief.

When I spoke to the CS rep on the phone I asked him if I just pack it up and send it back and he said no so i'm at a loss really.

Saying i'm having the site steal money from him is hardly fair in my opinion. I very politely contacted the seller and requested that the accept a return and he refused. I told him several times that I had no desire to contact the site or leave negative feedback and he became more obnoxious with each email. When i spoke to the CS rep all I asked was for the seller to accept a return (at my cost, i would add) and he just went ahead and said my account would be credited the amount I paid for it.

Call the police then?

At no point during this whole mess have I tried to steal/con/cheat anyone. At all. In any way. I've followed the resolution instructions to the T.

The seller should pay to have the item returned to him as they were not as described, its not the responsibility of Goose.

I was even willing eat the cost of returning it so to have my character called in to question and be labelled a common thief is completely unfair.

I'll gladly return the damn thing once I have it confirmed i've been refunded by the seller

Most people will require the item back before refunding due to the nature of buyers on Ebay these days.

Goose, I trusted you the relevant quote from eBay FAQ and link to FAQ. Maybe seller was unreasonable with you. But it appears to be both of you are about equally responsible. If the way I've interpreted some of you posts here (and others seem to agree) is the way you communicated with seller I can understand how he may have become offended and told you to ****** off.

Not saying you are not a nice honest chap. Just reading between the lines and not having all the pertinent info it looks like there's plenty of blame for all parties involved.

I avoid that site as much as possible. This is an example of why. Too easy for both seller and buyer to get burned.
