I've purchased the 'Advanced Hunter' package as a gift for a friend...Does he just need to create an account for me to gift it to him and he's good to go or does he have to purchase something to 'activate' his account?

Just tell him to make an account and gift it to him

Argh still cant decide over the 325a and standard hornet, Love the 325a looks like it'll be deadly but will I regret getting that over the hornet? Not TOO fussed about cargo space as I can just get another ship with in-game monies for that. I don't want to end up in a 325a and getting blown up all the time , seeing hornets rolling around laughing

the 325a should be able to handle a hornet.. Remember a lot of the success will be pilot flying skill not the equipment

Have a look at the ship specs page too and do your own comparisons. I'm going to throw a spanner in the works. Considered a Cutlass? :D Very maneuverable more so than a hornet and 325a but very much a glass cannon. Can do high output but cant take a lot!

Ship Specs

Yep, if you're friend has never bought (pledged) then he won't have a Backer status and will miss out on any further pledge goals.

$5 skin as said above will start his Backer status.

I looked at them but the glass cannon aspect puts me right off

I think the Cutlass is going to need some skills to fly and survive in a fight if you can't take down your opponent quickly. I look forward to seeing lots of Cutlass newbies being obliterated :D

Very nearly bought one myself, really nice looking ship but I know I'm no dogfighting master, I'll stick to my chunky Freelancer !

Looks interesting, always liked freelancer and freespace2, only I'm getting a real heavy pay 2 win game vibe here which is a little off putting on top of all the restrictions and legal crap of an mmo game that wants to tell you what you can't name things etc.

Will all ships be purchasable from earning in game currency?

Anyone know what the server situation will be like, ie will I be able to use my same account and play on USA servers or EU with my same ships etc? Seeing as I game with a lot of friends abroad... and I really can't stand the games that lock you in and then have transfer fees.

I like the hornet whats the cheapest way to get it, best bang for buck...

I was looking at this ...... https://robertsspaceindustries.com/store/71-digital-colonel

probably the most I'd pay .... as its bit heavy as far as early funding goes for a game to me anyway, anyone got more info about this insurance thing, and why its advertised for all the deals like its something you really need to get...fyi I ***** hate insurance scampanies.

I like there currency name chit..

Yep, ships and everything.
You can buy in-game currency or do a short grind and earn it. It will not be pay to win, because anything Mr. Richy Rich can buy, you can earn.

Packages are all about accessing the Alpha and Beta, contributing to the development and helping out where you can, rather than just buying stuff ready for when the game launches.

Insurance - Every ship will need insurance, unless you have enough UECs to tolerate buying everything fresh again - It's reckoned that a ship costing $30 now will cost 60,000 UECs in-game after launch.
Insurance will be a minor cost that should be no problem maintaining. Some packages come with 1, 2, 3 or even 6 months free insurance to start you off. Those with smaller ships can expect to have bought something well before the included insurance expires!
Obviously if you're headed to the BAD zones, where heavy piracy and death are highly likely, your insurance simply won't cover that!

I like there currency name chit..
Chit is just a thing, like a travel warrant or hall pass.
UEC (United Eath Credits, or simply credits for shot) is the actual currency.
The Chits stay with you until you start the game at launch, whereupon they become active... or you can use them now to buy minor stuff like hangar decorations from the Voyager store.

Everything is earn-able in game and you cant buy any exclusive gear through the credit store, only cosmetic stuff.

The ships are very rock paper scissors in design so doesn't matter if you have a hornet, a 300i can still down you if hes a better pilot or his ship is better specced.

Re the currency purchasing there's several limits in place EG 1) how many credits you can buy in a month 2) how many bought credits you can hold in your wallet.
EG you cant drop £1000 and buy an Idris as the wallet in game wont hold enough bought credits to do this.

Regarding the server localization we aren't sure yet, they were going to run the dog fighting on 1 server in the states but they are now rolling out a server in EU and US. Unsure if these are linked or what the situation is as it hasn't been announced. My best guess from the talk is they are all linked and work as one rather than 3 separate servers

Also if you get an original backer to buy it for you the cost will only be $110 as original and vet backers get a bit fo a discount compared to new folks (other option is to buy $110 of stuff gift it to a orig backer who can convert it into your digital colonel with LTI and gift it back)

Shout if you want me to do that, done it for a few folks on here so far

Re the Insurance. It's an in game credit well and mechanic. If you arent insured when your ship blows up you have to buy a new one. If you are insured you get your ship back, but only to the level you paid for, eg if you got basic hull insurance, you get a stock ship minus all the upgrades you had bought. The lifetime free insurance on your pledge ships basic hull is a backer perk orig for the first wave or 2 of backers, a lot of people gift newbies into it though to help them out.

To put it in context too. if you have an Idris corvette that gets blown up but its insured. You will get the ship replaced but not necessarily instantly as larger ships take longer times to get the insruance payout ship to you.. dependant on production and resources in the manufacturing areas and the pirate/trade activity in the space lanes.

if you lose 10 auroras in a day... your insurance company starts to make you wait longer for each replacement to kind of teach you a lesson/stop griefing but also to represent the more ships you burn the longer it will take for the ship companies to manufacture and deliver the replacement ships

This may be an interesting watch for some of the newbies. (an old video) The same principles given i this example relate to ships too ingame

There are some areas and people form th RSI forums that are really great. unfortunately there are a lot of idiots on the forums, more than you could count in a year, who for some reason think that because they backed they now have executive rights to demand anything they want

That Website has a very "space 'merica" feel to it lol

Yes I've noticed how USA-centric it is, most are probably from there but I'd love to know the global distribution of backers. I've seen a lot of the rather daft demands, especially enjoy the ones which essentially alter everything about the game, because "it would be cool if..."

ARGH!
