Carmack, Sweeney and Andersson talk G-Sync, Mantle, PC games, mobile

Got the feeling they couldnt care less about Mantle and the fact that they would have to deal with 5 different API's..

This says it all for me...

"No API just all of the sudden really makes a dramatic difference on things, because if you've built a good game engine, you know, any API, even if you magically made all that API overhead vanish it doesn't matter or make much of a difference it's the possibility"

but nvidia paid them to say that :p

I loved Andresson's response on ..

"Press Question: Can you tell us how much they paid you to use Mantle?"

The 3 of them knew it, the press knew it and everyone else knows it that they were paid to use it and even the other guys have said they dont like the thought of another API.

I don't care if they were paid to test a new tech... as long as it has a benefit

So you think mantle will bring no benefits at all? So amd just spent 2 years developing mantle for no reason at all. So a lot of the big name game makers have signed up to use mantle for no reason. Mantle will bring gains but more than that it should free up performance to increase visuals in games.

lets be honest it isnt going to revolutionize gaming is it ?

it will probably be extra 5 fps with the ap running at best. if it was that much of a game changer all devs would be oooh wait for mantle this and that and from what ive seen the only couple who are involved in it have said anythnig and even then it hasnt been mind blowing.

game devs will continue to make there games and this is just a bolt of thats it. rest spin and marketing as ususal.

This is quite possible, however it's free and will bring some benefits to AMD users on some major engines. Compare that to what's been going on in the hardware scene the last week or so, and you see people quite happy to pay £100+ for those extra 5fps.

Carmack is a has-been with a name trying to stay relevant, not to mention he's Nvidia whore :D

I'm not getting remotely excited by mantle until I see actual tangible and independent benchmark results. So far all it has been is hot air and empty promises.

Hot air and empty promises is going to far. Amd revealed it and said we would no more in november and it would be released for bf4 in December so far no promises have been broken.

It's an empty promise because without actual numbers it is worthless or meaningless. I am sure AMD will deliver Mantle but what will they deliver? So far all AMD has done is said Mantle exists and we think it's awesome. Asking someone to believe and then tell them to wait a few months and all will be revealed is not good marketing.

Apu13 is being held on the 13th-14th where they will release more info about mantle and it's been said some performance figures will be discussed. So far all they have done is stick to there time table.

Hmm, then how come going from DX11 to DX11.1 makes quite a big difference in BF 4? Can you have the same IQ and performance in DX9 as you would in DX11.x? And above all, isn't nVIDIA the one who forced Ubi to pull out DX10.1 from Assassin's Creed because they didn't support it and it was faster for AMD?

We don't really know what that API is capable of just yet. For instance, we saw dynamic smoke in Stalker Clear Sky, but since, I can't recall a single game using it, although it looks the same as nVIDIA PhysiX - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVJ3RKh9mCQ . Why the producers of Batman games haven't used it instead of the nvidia "thingy" so that anyone can benefit from it? Why they aren't a lot of DX10 games and only recently DX11 is getting traction after the new consoles are out? Support! You want great games, than you must have support from the producers and PC gamers who must embrace the future: 64bit OS, DX11 cards, 8GB RAM +, etc.

Anyway, we'll wait for some results and see, but if Mantle is pointless, PhysiX on nVIDIA only is more than ridiculous indeed and those guys should at least take a common ground, against proprietary tech and avoid double standards . :)

Yup Wed-thursday, lets see if AMDs cpus and AMD gpus were going to offer us something "substantial"

imo even 10fps ain't enough... needs to be 20-30fps for it to count, otherwise people will moan I could just have overclocked it for 6-8fps;)
