290/X or 7990

If not watercooling then I think you only have two options, I am disregarding the caveats in OP. :D

1) 7990 for quadfire with your 7950s :D
2) wait for a 290 pro with proper cooler

No good trying to talk me out of it mate. :D

Pick a card, any card. (from the ones listed above that is)

No. It's stupid :p

7990 = Little to no upgrade + downsides of it all being on one card like hassle with disabling xfire for example.

290/X = Less performance than you already have unless you're looking at future xfire.

It would be rude not to try quad fire first i agree. Not sure how my psu will react mind you. :p

You should definitely upgrade seeing as you only have one 670. You'll get more than double the fps!

I know but i need a change. Its hard to explain but i need a new toy to play with, to benchmark etc. I also quite like the idea of only using one PCI-E slot on my motherboard.

Yeah I know but I also need money for two new bathrooms,my miss just holds me back from buying it,and I must admit she is right.
At the moment I'm looking for hd 7970 and water block (second hand) and to build my first wc build.I would do it with gtx 670 but 2gig vram might be not enough soon.

290X for me Matt (been pondering it myself tbh ;)), 7990 too much of a side grade (and I think Mantle will shine a little more brightly on the newer architecture)

That is a fair point mate. I've heard from AMD PR that mantle will favour the 290X the most, but that all cards will get a good gain from it. The source is reliable as well.

That said, ive always had a soft spot the 7990. I don't know why.

7990 will only do quadfire with another 7990 and trifire only with a 7970 afaik

You can quadfire a 7990 with a a 7950. If i go that route i will test it.

I was searching about it on google recently I believe a 7990 can only tri/quadfire with another Tahiti XT GPU not a Tahiti Pro one.

I would say go for a 290/X because of the top performance for the money but do you not think you might wish you waited if a IceQ 290 came out next month?

RE: PCI-E 2, I am in the same predicament but a 3770K will unlock PCI-E 3 on my mobo. I imagine yours too. So if necessary that is a simple drop-in upgrade rather than buying whole new system.

My blocks are coming tomorrow so I will see if I saturate PCI-E 2 8x/8x with 2 290s. :D

First set of results
2 x R9 290Xs @1200/1625 PCI-E x16/x16
3970X @4.0 (low overclock to put more stress on PCI-E lanes)

PCI-E 1.0

PCI-E 2.0

PCI-E 3.0

Going to test now with bigger overclock on CPU

As always the price vs performance on Nvidia cards means i won't consider them. However the main factor is Battlefield 4. I will put a thousand hours or more into this game and to get the most performance possible from it ill need an AMD card and Mantle.

But you have a 290X on your choices and by my reckoning, a 780 with the free games sold, makes for a damn site cheaper card over the 290X. That's where the smart money goes over those 2. ;)

Just saying is all, just saying. :p

Loving your faith in Mantle...I hope it is living up to the hype that people have given it.

A 7950 shares the same Tahiti core as 7990 or a 7970 so will be able to crossfire with either.

I have a P8P67 Deluxe motherboard. Is that PCI-E 3.0 capable? Not sure. Interested to see your results. How are you getting on with air cooling? Not seen you post any benchmarks or such.

Thanks Kaap not really a huge difference then.

Is no one going to press a claim for a 7990? Come on 7990 users make a claim for your card. I've been looking at reviews and at 1440p it trumps every card out there, including a 690 which is also a great card.

I've got a 7990.

Heat and noise is not an issue, doesnt go over 85c.

Damn impressive bit of kit and I'm not really noticing to many differences from my old sli setup.
