This was only briefly mentioned in another thread and it deserves far more widespread knowledge that that.

The authorities in the Philippines are struggling to bring relief to some of the areas worst affected by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the deadliest storms ever to hit the country.

Up to 10,000 are said to have died in Tacloban city and hundreds elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands are displaced.

The typhoon flattened homes, schools and an airport in Tacloban.

Relief workers are yet to reach some towns and villages cut off since the storm.

In many areas there is no clean water, no electricity and very little food.

Thousands of troops have been deployed to the disaster zones and military cargo planes are flying in supplies. However, rescuers are hampered by debris and damaged roads.

Horrible stuff. Normally this gets buried in other news. This thread has little more vantage than to get it out there.

That is insane. Like storms you see on other planets.

that is a beastie... I wonder what would it done to UK.

I wonder how the news would describe it given our "mega" storm was a fraction as powerful.

Our infrastructure is a little more solid so doubt we'd see quite the same level of devestation and coastal areas are generally a bit less built up but it would definitely leave its mark.

Reports in the Metro this morning of a scene worse than Hell, corpses hanging from trees, people trying not to be sick from the smell of the dead. One worker said that everyone he had spoken to had lost someone. Normally I'd think these were press exaggerations but not in this case.

Storm is now in Vietnam and making its way to China.

worst part is that they had an earthquake the week before. so a lot of their backup shelters are gone before the storm even hit them. unlike uk houses, their house are not designed to retain heat, so in winter and they are wet, it gets seriously dangerous.

The scenes of devastation on the news this morning were quite shocking. They’re going to need a lot of aid to recover from this.

Horrid. I feel for the families and loved ones left behind to pick up the pieces. This planet is getting worse and worse.

is it worse than the Tsunami from a few years back?

Poor people. :(

Depends how you measure it. If you measure it in the number of dead, the Boxing Day Tsunami was about 180,000 confirmed, and a lot more estimated. There are always a tonne of people who they never confirm dead but who are presumed so.
