Those are far bigger in real-life than you realise! I sat in the cockpit of one last week (at Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle Airport)

Thats not too bad. if you look at planes that had to cram in lots of modern tech whilst maintaining the basically just post world war two cockpit design it gets worse and you are cramped so your body is blocking a good chuck of the switches.
