AMD True Audio

I seem to recall them showing a demo with a game using it, so im not sure if it is something that is game based or at a hardware level.

Obviously that was no help to you at all lol, i too however am curious :)

thief, star zitizen, upcoming games but not used yet in games as far I know.

trueaudio present the sound how it should sound to the sound card you use.
so its not a audiocard chip.

Is this actually used in anything right now? Humbug's just asked me how do I find using it.

And well, I'm at a loss about even using it :p

Well you have got to admit that AMD have a sense of humour, releasing a card with true audio and a cooler that can totally annihilate it.

All joking aside, I am in the same boat as you, I have not used it either.

I use a Xonar Essence STX with Corsair SP2500's/PC360's.

How will that effect this True Audio in games that use it?

A lot of it is about positioning, so it'll need surround sound to get the most from it. But it's more than that -- though that aspect has nothing to do with the sound card.

The 7790 has trueaudio on it as it was a tester of sorts but there was no way of us using it due to drivers. I only found that out offa the Pcper podcast a few weeks ago

I searched google hoping to find some dev support for True Audio but even on AMD's own forums nobody is even asking for it. Thought maybe I could write a little demo but there's nothing out there...

Well with positioning I'm a bit out of it with my 2.1.

True Audio is more than just that. If you watch the demo from the hawaii event the founder of AstoundSound goes in to great length explaining that their API would get positional data straight from the game and be able to emulate surround sound properly through 2.0/2.1 speakers/headphones(headphones yielding the best result). The true audio chip is basicly just hardware accelerated audio just like physx on the gpu is hardware accelerated but as with physX, APIs such as AstoundSound can be run using the CPU instead of the True Audio chip but one would have to expect performance loss doing it.

So fare games such as Lichdome and thief are suppose to support a sound API that can make use of the True Audio chip.

True Audio is how one would hear a sound bite it in real life, depending on distance etc.

I have no idea if any game out now supports it or not though. It sounds interesting.
