What monitor for photography / gaming?

If your wanting to spend that kind of money I suggest looking at the Eizo Foris FS2333 .. considering one myself. Hoping ocuk consider stocking these in the future as sadly not widely avaliable in the UK.

Don't want to spend that much money but if that's what it takes to get a decent monitor that does the job and last as long as this old thing I'll scrape the money together :)

I should have put some requirements but I wasn't 100% sure, here goes:
  • IPS Panel (99% sRGB coverage?)
  • At least 24" (1920x1200)
  • Good viewing angles
  • Factory calibrated or buy a calibrate later on

Anything else fit the bill?

Cheers for the suggestions. I think I may have been going over the top with the U2413, not needing wide gamut or a professional grade monitor the U2412M or maybe at a stretch the PA248Q would be suitable.
With both of these people are complaining about the heavy anti-glare coating reducing image quality, is it that noticeable?
 
Interesting suggestion, not sure about that aspect ratio though. I think it's too wide for my desk too! :p

  • DELL U2412M - £230 - 95.8% sRGB (+Calibrator)
  • HP ZR2440w - £342 - 95.8% sRGB (+Calibrator)
  • Asus PA248Q - £330 - 95.8% sRGB (Factory Calibrated)
  • DELL U2413 - £390 - 100% sRGB (Factory Calibrated)

I was going for the U2412M since I don't need wide-gamut support, but after looking at customer reviews & quality issues I'm now thinking the U2413 for better quality, more future proof?

Can't decide now which new toy to get :D, please help!

I've had an order fora b-grade Dell S2240L canceled so back in the market, and missus has agreed I can spend a bit more than planned!

Out of interest, are you considering higher resolution monitors, or is 1920x1200 OK for you? I ask only as it's sometimes useful to have extra 'screen width' so you can run e.g. lightroom next to PS. I've seen dual monitor set-ups that were a dream from a workflow perspective because of this - I've generally struggled in flicking between apps on a single 19" screen, although that was partly due to delays in scren updates making me lose the flow.

unless you want or need wide gamut support i personally think it's silly to pay the extra for the U2413. IF you wanted to game at all it also suffers from pretty bad overshoot problems.

The Dell P2414H might be a good option instead of the U2412M - standard gamut still, but improved anti-glare coating, flicker free backlight, no overshoot issues for gaming...
 
Thanks for the suggestion, hadn't spotted that one! Biggest issue however, is that 1920x1200 is the lowest resolution I need from a new monitor. I'd love to go for even higher, like a 27" but then the cost is getting out of hand for good quality + maybe more GPU upgrades to keep up with the latest games so I've restricted myself to a good quality 24"....which ever that might be :)

You mentioned the 2413 has overshoot issues, is this really noticeable even in the gaming mode?

With that in mind & if it was your money, which would you go for?
 
The gaming mode only impacts the signal processing lag and has no bearing on the response time and overdrive control. The overshoot on the U2413 is bad and I wouldn't classify it as a good gaming monitor as a result. Its for pro grade work really

If you decide you want wide gamut the Asus PA249Q might be better. If you decide standard gamut is more suitable then the Other models you've listed are the only real 16:10 IPS Choices. The Dell P2414H is well worth a look too if you don't mind 16:9 aspect. See the reviews on TFTcentral for all those models by the way :)
 
Standard gamut, IPS, 16:10 + calibrator + light gaming = U2412M by the looks of it?

Colour accuracy is more important than gaming so if I changed that to very little gaming would that make a recommendation easier? :)

Btw no need to plug tftcentral...that's where I've been getting most of the info, just hadn't got round to reading them all...yet :p
 
Thanks for all your help, I went for the Dell U2413 in the end. It's my first IPS panel so I was expecting a little IPS glow but wasn't expecting it to be this noticeable.

Is this an acceptable amount?
